Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Southend
Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe, like old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. If a drone is not the right tool, we’ll say so. If you’ve noticed outlets choked with leaves and silt and moss building up on slopes and in gutters, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Villages like Southend frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

- Your timetable, such as an exchange date

Can I check my roof myself?
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
Drones, thermal imaging and Southend roofs
Southend is within about 5 miles of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.
Anyone responsible for a site like Newtown Soberton Infant School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover
This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
- A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
- Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

How the survey works
The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. In total, it takes between one and two hours for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. In a small place like Southend, access is typically the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
- We also look inside the loft space where it is safe.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
How to prepare
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

Common questions in Southend
Is drone flying allowed in Southend?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Is my home in Southend listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days when booking.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch.
How do I arrange a drone roof survey in Southend?
To book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and agree a day with you.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.
Signs you need a drone roof survey in Southend
Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. A drone gets close-up views from a safe position on the ground.
Problems we come across frequently include:
- Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
- Plant growth and moss on the roof
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Worn lead at chimneys and walls
If you live in an older home near Church of the Holy Trinity, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
