Airspace, weather and Morestead roofs

Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.

Take an older house close to Morestead Church: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image. For any home in Morestead, it’s the small, early fault that is cheapest to put right.

Morestead is about 3 miles south-east of Winchester, in Hampshire. We survey roofs in Morestead and the surrounding area across London and South East England. Our area takes in places right across Hampshire, large and small. There is also a page for Southampton.

Surveys in SO21 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If you need a drone roof survey at a property on Morestead Road and Jackman's Hill or a nearby road, we can help. Close by, we survey roofs in Owslebury Bottom (1 mile south), Owslebury (1 mile south), Baybridge (2 miles south-east), Hensting (2 miles south) and Temple Valley (2 miles north-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Winchester (3 miles north-west), Eastleigh (5 miles south-west), Fareham (13 miles south), Andover (15 miles north-west), Horndean (14 miles south-east) and Totton (13 miles south-west).

About our drone roof survey in Morestead

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where it applies, along with structural analysis, a same-day report and an in-person consultation. There’s a 12-month follow-up as well. We will tell you if a drone isn’t the right tool for your roof. Every drone survey comes with a written report and close-up photographs. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, flat roofs on upper floors and tall and steep roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are flashings that have come away and moss building up on slopes and in gutters.

Villages like Morestead frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. It’s useful straight away, and a good reference for later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

FAQs for Morestead

Are there drone restrictions around Morestead?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Is my home in Morestead listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

How long will you be at the property?

Most surveys take an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. We’ll confirm the timing when you book.

Are you insured?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

Does the report include photos?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, which makes the report easy to follow.

What we do, step by step

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit normally takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. For a village or hamlet like Morestead, the journey is planned beforehand: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Find any records of previous roof work

Advice

Tips that help

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to talk through the photos and findings. It’s a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Every so frequently, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Photograph anything new.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Morestead

Landlords, agents and building managers in Morestead and across Hampshire can book any of our surveys. To discuss a property or a block, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant, which helps with budgets and planning.

Can I check my roof myself?

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
