How a drone roof survey works in Ovington

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. High wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date. We check the forecast ahead of the visit and again on site. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We survey large and complex roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and fragile roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are ridge and hip pieces working loose and standing water on a flat roof.

Some older homes in villages like Ovington are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

The survey, step by step

We will ask a few questions first, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes about 1–2 hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. For a village or hamlet like Ovington, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Let us know about parking before the day
  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming

Do you need a drone roof survey in Ovington?

Strong winds can lift slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Damage on a high or steep roof is hard to judge from the garden. A drone shows what has slipped, lifted or gone.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Cracked mortar along the ridge
  • Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below
  • Plant growth and moss on the roof

The streets around a church such as Church of St Peter are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What they will not be able to tell you
  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • What experience they bring

What’s in a roof survey

Before and after the survey

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace

The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. They’ll see exactly where each defect is.

After a storm, check from the garden and the street. Debris in the garden is a sign to act on. A drone survey can show what has shifted.

Ovington questions

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Ovington?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

Do you cover smaller places like Ovington?

Yes. Ovington is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

How do I arrange a drone roof survey in Ovington?

Just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.

How long does the survey take?

Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. The report is sent afterwards by email.

What does the report include?

A written report with photographs, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

How fast do I get the report?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

Drone roof surveys in Ovington: local notes

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. About 3.4 miles south-east lies Hinton Ampner House, a reminder of how long the area around Ovington has been built on. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If you look after a building such as Perins School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Leave it or get it looked at?

With drone photos, everyone can see the same thing. They show the location and extent of each defect, which helps when you ask for quotes. Outbuildings and barns around Ovington are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
