What happens if roof problems are left?

Leaving a slipped slate or a blocked valley can turn a small fault into a leak. Spotting them early keeps the work smaller, whatever height the roof is. Around Horseport, older homes frequently have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how safely it can be seen. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT.

How a drone roof survey works in Horseport

A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it cannot see under the coverings or into the loft. We check the loft from inside where it’s safe, because the underside tells its own story. Inside and out together tell you far more. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. Where the loft can’t be reached safely, we note it. We’re often asked to look into lifted or split lead flashings and plant growth and moss on the roof, on valleys and parapet gutters, fragile roofs and large and complex roofs.

Villages like Horseport frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

What a drone roof survey does not cover

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:

  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs

Checking the roof from ground level

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.

Horseport: your questions answered

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Horseport?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Is Horseport within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.

Does the weather affect the survey?

It depends on the weather and the survey. In strong wind or a downpour, a drone can’t fly and access may not be safe, so we’d move the date with you.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, as long as access is agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.

Are you insured?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only if it is safe. We check everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

How the survey works

On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely. The survey normally takes between one and two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Somewhere as small as Horseport, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Check the loft hatch can be reached

Booking a survey

Most bookings start with a short call: call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Horseport

Big commercial and industrial roofs cover a lot of ground. A drone can photograph a large roof methodically. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.

Signs worth acting on include:

  • Worn lead at chimneys and walls
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
  • Chimney tops in poor condition

Take an older house close to St Mary's Church: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

What to check before booking

  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • What the report includes, and whether it has photos
  • Whether the price includes VAT
  • Their insurance cover

What to expect from a roof survey

What a drone roof survey looks like in Horseport

About 3 miles north lies Breamore House, a reminder of how long the area around Horseport has been built on. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.

Take a building like Fordingbridge Infant School: big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.
