Thermal roof surveys for Horseport homes and businesses

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Horseport

Thermal imaging works best in the right conditions. It helps to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, a strong wind or heavy cloud can make the images less clear. We talk through the forecast as you book, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. If you’ve noticed moisture around outlets and upstands and patches of heat loss across the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Some older homes in villages like Horseport are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

What we cannot see

In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Confirming water without moisture readings
  • Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
  • The condition of timbers we cannot see

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will recommend the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Flat roofs
  • Commercial roofs
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Loft conversions

Can I check my roof myself?

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Horseport

With Breamore House about 3 miles north, Horseport sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St Mary's Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image. Take a building like Fordingbridge Infant School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Horseport is in Hampshire. From houses to flats and shops in Horseport, we can survey the roof on a weekday or at the weekend. Our Hampshire coverage includes Horseport. We also survey roofs in Southampton.

How it works

We check the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Around Horseport, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
  4. Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Useful tips for Horseport property owners

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
  • Note where damp appears and after what weather
  • Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
  • Photograph damp patches with the date

Buyers can use the findings when talking to the seller or agent. What you do with it is up to you, whether you ask for work before completion or discuss the price.

Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Insulation is often moved when people work in the loft space.

Why get it checked now?

A damp patch that keeps coming back usually has a cause that hasn’t been found. Combining the camera with moisture readings can help find it, rather than more guesswork. Around Horseport, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.

Prices start from £150, inc. VAT, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both with VAT included. We confirm the price for your roof before booking.

FAQs for Horseport

Do you cover smaller places like Horseport?

Yes, Horseport is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

How do I find out if my home in Horseport is listed?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

How do I book a survey in Horseport?

The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or email us. Tell us the address and a little about the roof, and we will take it from there. Surveys run on any day of the week.

Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?

It can help narrow down where water may be getting in. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings because the camera cannot confirm water on its own.

What do I do with the report?

The report arrives by email, with photos and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.

Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?

The camera doesn’t see water itself. Wet insulation holds heat longer than dry, so it can stand out, but we check each finding with moisture readings.

Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?

Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. We look from the loft as well, where there’s safe access.

How we price thermal roof surveys

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:

  • Which survey package you book
  • Height and safe access
  • House, block, shop or office
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight

To find out what your survey will cost, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and some details. We will confirm the figure before booking.

What to let us know when you contact us

There’s no need for technical words. It’s enough to tell us:

  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Anything about access we should know
  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • What’s prompted the survey

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, so call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the details.
