Drone roof surveys in West End

How a drone roof survey works in West End

A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. We keep the camera on the roof we are surveying, not on gardens or windows next door. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it’s worth letting them know about the visit. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Each flight is kept short and stays focused on the roof we are there to survey. If you’re worried about moss building up on slopes and in gutters and damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below, we can find out what’s behind it, on large and complex roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and tall and steep roofs alike.

Places like West End can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind, while thermal imaging also works best with little wind. Each flight is planned with neighbours’ privacy in mind, as well as the airspace and the wind.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

The survey, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. A typical visit takes an hour or two for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Homes around West End often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Mention any side of the property we can’t get to. The loft, where there is safe access, completes the picture.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
  • If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in

Booking a survey

Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Photos from a drone survey show how the roof looks today. Comparing them with later photos shows what has changed. It helps when you plan ahead. Arranging work in a smaller place like West End is easier with notice than in an emergency. A survey gives you that notice.

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.

West End: your questions answered

Are there drone restrictions around West End?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. The flight restriction zone around Southampton Airport covers West End, or comes right up to its edge. We ask the airport for permission before flying there, and only fly if it is given. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in West End?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

How long is the visit?

Most surveys take an hour or two on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. We’ll confirm the timing as you book.

How much does a drone roof survey cost in West End?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all inc. VAT.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report.

Do you look in the roof space?

Usually, if there is one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.

Honest limits

It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:

  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.

What we check

  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Tall and steep roofs

Roof by roof

Steep slate and tile slopes

Old slates and clay tiles can crack underfoot. The drone sees them without touching them, so the survey does not add damage.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. From above, we can see the linings, the joints and any debris.

Flying and imaging in West End

West End lies within about 4 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. The flight restriction zone around Southampton Airport covers West End, or comes right up to its edge. Before any flight there, we ask the airport for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it is given.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Saint James' Church of England Primary School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. Shop and office owners around Marlands Shopping Centre may find that large commercial roofs are often easiest to see by drone or thermal camera. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of St James, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

What you can safely check yourself

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

For landlords and managing agents

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps when budgeting.

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.
