Drone roof survey in Charter Alley, Hampshire
Drone roof surveys in Charter Alley from an independent, experienced roof surveyor. More than 20 years and over 5,000 surveys.
- Moss and weeds taking hold up top
- Loose ridge and hip tiles
- Outlets choked with leaves and silt
DIY checks: what’s safe
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That is where a survey comes in.
About our drone roof survey in Charter Alley
We fly a sub-250g drone, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. We never fly where it is not safe. If you are worried about hidden gutters full of leaves and worn lead at chimneys and walls, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on fragile roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and chimney stacks alike.
Villages like Charter Alley frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It is useful right away, and a good reference for later.

The survey, step by step
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. You are welcome to ask questions while we are there. Somewhere like Charter Alley needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
- Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Before the survey
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Keep pets in another room

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Charter Alley
Chimney tops take the worst of the weather. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are often invisible from below. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Vegetation in valleys and gutters
- Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
- Outlets choked with leaves and silt
Anyone responsible for a site like The Priory Primary School will know that big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.
Questions to ask before you book
- Are they insured for the work?
- What experience they bring
- Whether the roof space is looked at, where there is one
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
Roof by roof
Valleys and parapet gutters
A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. It’s almost impossible to see from ground level, but it’s plain to see from the air.
Large commercial roofs
Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. The drone covers the roof area by area, so nothing is skipped.

All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:
- Which survey package you book

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Charter Alley
Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The wider area around Charter Alley has a long history of building, with The Vyne about 2.6 miles east. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
Take an older house close to Christ Church: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

FAQs for Charter Alley
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Charter Alley?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Do you cover smaller places like Charter Alley?
Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access as you book.
How long is the visit?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. The written report follows by email.
How much is a survey?
Prices start from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.
What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover
Every survey has limits, and it’s better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- Close-up photos of next door’s property
- Flights in strong wind or a downpour
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
