What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover

Before you book, it’s worth knowing what a survey will not do:

  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks
  • Tall and steep roofs

How a drone roof survey works in Hangersley

They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from the ground. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or isn’t safe. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. If a drone is not the right tool, we’ll say so. Common reasons to book are cracked mortar along the ridge and plant growth and moss on the roof, across flat roofs on upper floors, fragile roofs and chimney stacks.

Some older homes in villages like Hangersley are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

What we look for on each type of roof

Large commercial roofs

Many commercial roofs have fragile sheets or roof lights. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.

Valleys and parapet gutters

When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.

Before and after the survey

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off

We email the report to you, with close-up photographs from the flight. Each finding is explained in plain words, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.

Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Take photos of any changes.

Hangersley questions

How do I find out if my home in Hangersley is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Is drone flying allowed in Hangersley?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

Is Hangersley in your area?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and that includes Hangersley.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

How long will you be at the property?

It usually takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. You will then get the report by email, on the timescale of your package.

Does the weather affect the survey?

It can, depending on the survey. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof and little wind. We will rearrange with you if the weather isn’t right.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

What happens on the day

Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. If you have questions on the day, just ask. For a village or hamlet like Hangersley, the journey is planned ahead of time: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect what can be seen safely, inside and out.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it before the visit.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

Common roof problems in Hangersley

Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. We fly from the ground and bring the camera close to the roof.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
  • Lifted or split lead flashings
  • Moss and weeds taking hold up top
  • Standing water on a flat roof

For an older house near a landmark such as St John the Baptist, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

What’s in a roof survey

How we price drone roof surveys

We confirm the price for the job before you book. These are the things that affect it:

  • Roof area
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office

There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you need to know.

Booking your survey

Getting the details right at the start saves time. It helps to include:

  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel

Photos help, if you have them. Take them safely from ground level or a window; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
