About our drone roof survey in Abshot

Drones need reasonable weather. We don’t fly in strong wind or a downpour, because control and safety come first. If the weather turns, we will agree another day or inspect what we can by other means. We check the forecast before the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We survey large and complex roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and flat roofs on upper floors, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are ridge and hip pieces working loose and cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below.

In a small place like Abshot, open ground can mean strong wind. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

It isn’t only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Abshot?

Big commercial and industrial roofs cover a lot of ground. A drone can photograph a large roof methodically, showing patterns of wear that are hard to spot up close. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
  • Lead work pulling away at abutments
  • Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds

If you live in an older home near St John, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • Is VAT included in the price?
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • Their report turnaround times

What to expect from a roof survey

How we price drone roof surveys

We confirm the exact price before you book. This is what makes a difference:

  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
  • The size of the roof
  • Which survey package you book
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.

Helping us price your survey

The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you get in touch, it’s useful to mention:

  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Your timetable, like an exchange date
  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • Access details, like a loft hatch or a shared roof

Booking is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or email us and give us a few details about the property and we will recommend the right survey. The price is agreed up front.

What you can safely check yourself

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

What happens on the day

Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Somewhere like Abshot needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Preparing for the visit

  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at

Arrange a survey

Not sure which survey you need? It is easiest to phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We will talk you through the options and what they cost.

Roof by roof

Steep slate and tile slopes

Walking on fragile coverings can break them. The drone sees them without touching them, so the survey doesn’t add damage.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Felt often lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. Photos show how the covering is wearing.

For landlords and managing agents

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, with the most urgent items set out first.

Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out with the most urgent first where relevant, which helps with budgets and planning.

Questions from Abshot

Will you come out to Abshot?

Yes. Abshot is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.

Is drone flying allowed in Abshot?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

How many surveys have you done?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

What happens after the survey?

You receive the written report by email, with photos and recommendations. It’s yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.

How long will you be at the property?

That depends on the size and shape of the roof, but most surveys take between one and two hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. The report is sent afterwards by email.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to, and the report makes that clear.

Abshot is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.
