Drone roof survey in Stone
The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We don’t fly in strong wind or a downpour, because control and safety come first. If the weather turns, we’ll agree another day. We check the forecast ahead of the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs, and people most often book us about standing water on a flat roof and worn lead at chimneys and walls.
Somewhere as small as Stone, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

What affects the price in Stone
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. These are the things that affect it:
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- The roof’s overall size
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- House, block, shop or office
A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. You will know the price for your roof before booking.
Getting in touch
Before you get in touch, it’s useful to have:
- Anything about access we should know
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- The kind of building and roof involved
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or email us.
Different roofs, different checks
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Outlets, edges and roof plant are common problem areas. They’re all captured in close-up, as far as the flight allows.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Walking on fragile coverings can break them. The drone sees them without touching them, so the survey doesn’t add damage.
Drones, thermal imaging and Stone roofs
Stone is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Beaulieu Palace House, about 4.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Stone. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you live in an older home near St Francis, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Stone is about 3 miles north-west of Cowes, in Hampshire. We survey roofs in Stone and the rest of Hampshire, as part of our work across London and South East England. Our Hampshire coverage includes Stone. We also survey roofs in Southampton.
Surveys in SO45 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Close by, we survey roofs in Gurnard (3 miles south-east), Cowes (3 miles south-east), Rew Street (4 miles south), Northwood (4 miles south-east) and Great Thorness (4 miles south). Further out, we also cover Gosport (9 miles east), Eastleigh (12 miles north), Fareham (8 miles north-east), Totton (11 miles north-west), Chandler's Ford (13 miles north) and Hedge End (9 miles north).

How it works
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Cottages and farmhouses around Stone frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
- The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
- Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Advice
Questions from Stone
How do I find out if my home in Stone is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Will you come out to Stone?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.
What does a roof survey cost?
Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. You’ll know the price for the job before booking. To get a price, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Do I need to be at home?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Can you fly a drone near an airport?
Only with the right permission. Confirmed flight restriction zones include Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Stansted, Luton and Southampton, among others, where the airport or air traffic control must give permission first. If permission isn’t given, the roof is inspected from other safe viewpoints.
How long does the visit take?
On site, it usually takes about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. That includes the checks before the drone goes up.
Are you registered with the CAA?
Yes, we are. The CAA has issued us a Flyer ID and an Operator ID, and the drone itself is under 250g, kept within sight on every flight.
Honest limits
Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
- Flights in strong wind or heavy rain
- A structural engineer’s report

Useful tips for Stone property owners
A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Our tips:
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. Drone photos are included where we could fly, alongside the other checks in the package.
Do not block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it’s something only an inside check will show. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.
