- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Worn lead at chimneys and walls
- Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
How the survey works
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. Somewhere like Porchfield needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
- If permission is needed, we ask for it before the visit.
- On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
- The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
- We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in

Drone roof survey in Porchfield: what you get
Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. Safety comes first on every visit. If you’re worried about worn lead at chimneys and walls and tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack, we can find out what’s behind it.
In a village or hamlet like Porchfield, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from ground level. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

What you can safely check yourself
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover
This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
- Photos in conditions too poor to fly
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you. What our survey covers.
Roof types and parts we check
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Tall and steep roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Fragile roofs
- Large and complex roofs

What a drone roof survey looks like in Porchfield
Porchfield lies within about 2 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Porchfield
Will you come out to Porchfield?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Is my home in Porchfield listed or in a conservation area?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Will the drone film my neighbours?
We point the camera at your roof only. Next door’s windows and gardens are kept out of shot as far as possible. It helps to tell neighbours beforehand.
How much does a drone roof survey cost in Porchfield?
Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Visible signs like deflection or sagging are recorded, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. If one is needed, the report says so.
Will the drone show what’s under the tiles?
No. It shows what’s on the outside. The underside tells us things the drone cannot, so we check the loft too where we can.
Is a drone roof survey a thermal survey?
No, the drone survey is photographic. For thermal imaging, look at the Premium Survey or our thermal roof survey, and its findings are checked with moisture readings.
