Drone roof surveys in Locksgreen

About our drone roof survey in Locksgreen

Drones need reasonable weather. Strong wind or a downpour rules out a flight, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, tall and steep roofs and fragile roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are debris building up in hidden gutters and moss building up on slopes and in gutters.

Older buildings in small places like Locksgreen may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

The report doesn’t just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

Drones, thermal imaging and Locksgreen roofs

Locksgreen lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.

In and around Locksgreen, as anywhere, a roof is easiest to deal with when its problems are found early. Swainston Manor, about 1.7 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Locksgreen. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof itself.

Locksgreen is about 3 miles west of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. Locksgreen gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. Our the Isle of Wight coverage includes Locksgreen. For surveys nearby, see our Southampton page.

What a survey costs

Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • Basic, Standard or Premium

Every price we give includes VAT. Prices start from £400, including VAT. You will know the price for the job before you book.

Helping us price your survey

The more you tell us, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, tell us:

  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors

Not sure which survey you need? It’s easiest to phone 07833 053749 or email us and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We will talk you through the options and what they cost.

What we do, step by step

We’ll ask a few questions first, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. For a village or hamlet like Locksgreen, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Before the survey

  • Tell us about parking before the day
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Getting a price

When you are ready to go ahead, call 07833 053749 or email us. From there it’s a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day.

Locksgreen questions

Do you cover smaller places like Locksgreen?

Yes, we do. Our area covers London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Locksgreen?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding.

Will the drone show what’s under the tiles?

No. A drone shows the outside surfaces of the roof in close detail, but it cannot see under the coverings. Where there’s safe access, we check the roof space from inside.

How long will you be at the property?

On site, it normally takes between one and two hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Time for the pre-flight checks is included.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only when it’s safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Just say which days work for you.

Practical tips

There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Expect us to rearrange if it is too windy or wet
  • Make sure there is room outside for the drone to take off
  • Shut pets inside while we fly

Keep the photos with your property records. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys, and they help if you sell.

Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Take photos of any changes.

What you can safely check yourself

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

What we look for on each type of roof

Large commercial roofs

Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We don’t test for it, but we flag it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Valleys and parapet gutters are hidden from the street. From above, we can see the linings, the joints and any debris.

When you need someone else

To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
