Drone roof survey in Newtown: what you get

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail. Everything we find goes into a photo-illustrated written report. It is also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. We survey chimney stacks, fragile roofs and large and complex roofs, and people most often book us about coverings that have slipped high up on the roof and debris building up in hidden gutters.

In a village or hamlet like Newtown, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later.

Before and after the survey

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Allow time for permission if you’re in a flight restriction zone
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns

Premium also includes a 12-month follow-up. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year.

Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, and early repairs keep water out.

Why get it checked now?

Leaving a slipped slate or a blocked valley can turn a small fault into a leak. Finding them now means less to put right. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Newtown, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. You’ll know the exact price before booking.

What happens on the day

After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a written report with photos, emailed to you. On timing, it usually takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Older rural homes like those around Newtown can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Advice

What we look for on each type of roof

Valleys and parapet gutters

When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.

Steep slate and tile slopes

Old slates and clay tiles can crack underfoot. The drone sees them without touching them, so the survey doesn’t add damage.

What we are asked to look at in Newtown

Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. A drone gets close-up views from a safe position on the ground.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Lead work pulling away at abutments
  • Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters

The streets around a church such as Holy Spirit Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • Their drone registration, if they fly one
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see

What to expect from a roof survey

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, with the most urgent items set out first.

An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

Flying and imaging in Newtown

Newtown is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.

With Swainston Manor about 1.6 miles south-east, the area around Newtown has a long history. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

What’s the best way to book?

The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Give us the address and some details about the roof, and we will take it from there. Surveys run seven days a week.
