Newtown questions

Is Newtown in the area you cover?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Newtown as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Is my home in Newtown listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

What will the report tell me?

You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, and ends with what we recommend. Points are put with the most urgent first where relevant.

How do I book a survey in Newtown?

The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or send us an email. Give us the address and a few details about the roof. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends.

What do I do with the report?

The report arrives by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

Thermal roof survey in Newtown

Thermal imaging works best in the right conditions. It is useful to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, a strong wind or heavy cloud can make the images less clear. We talk through the forecast when you book, and our report notes the conditions and how they affected what we saw. If you’ve noticed heat escaping through the roof and ceilings that feel colder in places, we can find out what’s behind it, on flat roofs, insulated roof spaces and loft conversions alike.

Villages like Newtown often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Roof by roof

GRP fibreglass roofs

Cracks in GRP can let water into the boards beneath. We combine a visual check of cracks with the thermal images around them.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Damp at junctions can be hard to see by eye. A careful visual inspection goes alongside the images.

What you can safely check yourself

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

Common roof problems in Newtown

On big commercial and residential flat roofs, thermal imaging helps owners plan. It can suggest which areas may be wet and which seem dry, so we know where to take moisture readings.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Gaps in loft insulation
  • Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
  • Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
  • Water that travels before it shows

For an older house near a landmark such as Holy Spirit Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

What to check before booking

  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • What follow-up you get after the report

What’s in a roof survey

Landlord and commercial surveys in Newtown

Landlords, agents and building managers in Newtown and across the Isle of Wight can book any of our surveys. For a price for a let property or a block, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant.

How we price thermal roof surveys

Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. These are the things that affect it:

  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • Roof area
  • House, block, shop or office
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, access and which survey you book.

Booking your survey

Before you get in touch, it helps to have:

  • Dates you are working to, such as exchange
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block

To book a survey, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us the address and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price before you book.

What happens on the day

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Around Newtown, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can safely be seen.
  3. Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
  4. We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
  5. We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.

How to prepare

  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a price

Most bookings start with a short call: phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.
