About our drone roof survey in Winsor

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. We never fly where it is not safe. We survey fragile roofs, chimney stacks and valleys and parapet gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack and coverings that have slipped high up on the roof.

In a village or hamlet like Winsor, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

After the visit, you get a report with photos, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Winsor questions

How do I find out if my home in Winsor is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Are there drone restrictions around Winsor?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed.

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.

Does the weather affect the survey?

Light rain does not normally stop a survey. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so if conditions aren’t right we’ll arrange another day with you.

How long is the visit?

That depends on the size and shape of the roof, but most surveys take an hour or two at most homes, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. The written report follows by email.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.

Useful tips for Winsor property owners

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
  • Book early if you’re near an airport
  • Let us know what you want to see

There is a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It shows whether anything has moved or worn since the first visit.

Keep the roof space ventilated. Poor airflow lets condensation build up, and it is something only an inside check will show. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

Can I check my roof myself?

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

Drone roof surveys around Winsor

Winsor is within about 4 miles of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.

Take a building like Copythorne CofE Infant School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Prices for drone roof surveys in Winsor

All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Our price is from £400, including VAT.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Winsor

Landlords and agents in Winsor book surveys as well as householders. A written report with photos gives you a clear record of the roof, which helps you plan work between tenancies.

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, putting the urgent items at the top.

How the survey works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. Most visits take between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. For a village or hamlet like Winsor, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Steep slate and tile slopes

Old slates and clay tiles can crack underfoot. A drone avoids that, so the survey does not add damage.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Felt frequently lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. We record the signs of age we can see.
