- Defects hidden under coverings or inside walls without opening up
- Walls, floors and services below the roof

About our roof survey in Winsor
We survey roofs in Winsor and across London and the South East. Visits run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance. You get a written report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. Houses, flats and commercial buildings all follow the same careful process. When you’re ready to book, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Common reasons to book are blocked, sagging or leaking gutters and worn or blocked valleys, on chimney stacks, ridges, hips and valleys and lead flashings.
Somewhere as small as Winsor, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are frequently old. We report on what can be seen safely, and thatch is a specialist material. On older roofs, it is normally the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Practical tips
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:
- Include dormers, porches and garages when you book
- Let us know about past leaks
- Take photos of any leaks as they happen
- Leave roof access to professionals
Your report arrives by email. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. Findings are explained in plain words.
Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear of leaves and moss, ideally after the leaves have fallen. Leave the clearing to a professional. Clear gutters prevent a lot of damp.
Winsor questions
How do I find out if my home in Winsor is listed?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Does being near the coast affect roofs in Winsor?
Often, yes. Winsor is within about 4 miles of the sea, and coastal roofs tend to see faster wear on metal parts and more wind lifting loose pieces.
Do you cover Winsor for roof surveys?
Yes, we do. Winsor is part of the area we cover, and the service is the same as everywhere else we work.
How much is a survey?
Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on older buildings, we flag them so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.
What insurance do you have?
Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
Do you look in the loft space?
Where it’s relevant to the survey and there is safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft cannot be reached safely, the report says so.
What we look for on each type of roof
Natural slate
Inside the loft space, we check what’s under the slates. Older roofs may have bitumen felt underlay, and very old roofs none.
Concrete interlocking tiles
Ridge and verge mortar on concrete tile roofs can crack and fall away. We check for loose ridge tiles and missing mortar.
What we are asked to look at in Winsor
The coverings are rarely the first thing to fail. ‘Nail fatigue’ is common on slate roofs: the nails rust and the slates slide. On tiled roofs, battens and pegs can rot.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Cracked or blistered flat roof coverings
- Lifted, split or missing lead flashings
- Water stains on rafters and ceiling joists
- Slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles
Landlords with a home close to Ashurst New Forest station may find that a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.
What to check before booking
- What exactly goes into their report
- Are they insured for the work?
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
Winsor homes and their roofs
Winsor is within about 4 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
Take a building like Copythorne CofE Infant School: large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. The streets around a church such as Church of St Mary are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.
Winsor is about 2 miles west of Totton, in Hampshire. In Winsor, as across Hampshire, every roof gets the same careful survey. We cover towns and villages across Hampshire. You can also see our page for Southampton.

Leave it or get it looked at?
A roof that has had no attention for years can surprise you. A survey sets a baseline, which makes later changes easy to spot. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. You’ll know the figure before booking.

How it works
We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey normally takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. For a village or hamlet like Winsor, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.
- We start with the property details and any concerns.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- We check the roof from every safe viewpoint outside.
- Inside, we check the roof space where there’s safe access.
- You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.
Before the survey
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Keep pets in another room
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
