Airspace, weather and Up Nately roofs

Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up aerial photos and thermal images help.

If you live in an older home near Church of St. Stephen, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Up Nately is about 5 miles east of Basingstoke, in Hampshire. Wherever you are in Up Nately, we can carry out drone roof surveys at your property. We cover towns and villages across Hampshire, from the larger towns to small villages. We also survey roofs in Reading.

How a drone roof survey works in Up Nately

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. Strong wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. If you’re worried about cracked mortar along the ridge and plant growth and moss on the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Somewhere as small as Up Nately, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Common questions in Up Nately

Is my home in Up Nately listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Up Nately?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to.

What will the report tell me?

Written findings with photographs, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend, by urgency where it matters. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

Do you look in the loft space?

If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs like sagging are noted, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.

The survey, step by step

There is not much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will get on with the inspection. A typical survey takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Cottages and farmhouses around Up Nately often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Up Nately

With a portfolio of properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To arrange surveys for several addresses, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. Surveys run seven days a week, which can make access easier.

Honest limits

Before booking, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • A structural engineer’s report
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

Should I look at the roof myself first?

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

Common roof problems in Up Nately

Chimney tops take the worst of the weather. From the ground, you rarely see cracked flaunching or loose pots. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.

Things that often lead to a survey include:

  • Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
  • Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below
  • Outlets choked with leaves and silt
  • Worn lead at chimneys and walls

Anyone responsible for a site like Robert May's School will know that big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.

What to check before booking

  • Whether VAT is added on top
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • Their track record with similar roofs

What to expect from a roof survey

Why it is worth a survey now in Up Nately

Leaving a slipped slate or a blocked valley can turn a small fault into a leak. Finding them now means less to put right, whatever height the roof is. Older cottages and farmhouses around Up Nately can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Prices start from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.
