Drone roof survey in Fyfield

They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from ground level. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or isn’t safe, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. We check the airspace for your address before the visit. We will tell you if another approach would work better. Common reasons to book are storm damage on steep or tall roofs and standing water on a flat roof, across flat roofs on upper floors, fragile roofs and chimney stacks.

In a small place like Fyfield, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters, with a note and a photo for each point. You will see the good as well as the bad.

How it works

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. All told, expect about 1–2 hours at a typical home, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Older rural homes like those around Fyfield can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Practical tips

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Tell us about any leaks or concerns
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Book early if you’re near an airport

We email the report to you, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Each finding is explained in plain words, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.

Every so frequently, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Photograph anything new.

What you can safely check yourself

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Fyfield

The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times. If your home is older, it’s worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Nicholas, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. In and around Fyfield, as anywhere, a roof is easiest to deal with when its problems are found early.

Why act early in Fyfield

A drone record gives you a baseline. Comparing them with later photos shows what has changed. It is useful for planning maintenance over the years. Around Fyfield, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What we look for on each type of roof

Ridges and hips

Ridges may be bedded in mortar or mechanically fixed. We record what we see of their condition.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. From above, we can see the linings, the joints and any debris.

Common questions in Fyfield

Is my home in Fyfield listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Fyfield?

Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.

How do I book a survey in Fyfield?

Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address. We will ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date, weekday or weekend.

How soon will I get the report?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email, ready to forward.

Will you check the loft?

Usually, if there is one and it can be reached safely. The loft space can show things the outside cannot, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when you book.

What we cannot see

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
