When you need someone else

It helps to know what a survey won’t do before booking:

  • What’s hidden inside a downpipe
  • Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits
  • Parts of gutters that can’t be seen safely

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What this survey covers

Gutter survey in Fyfield

Gutters are normally fixed to fascia boards, so we look at the fascias and soffits too. Water that overflows for long enough can rot timber fascias and mark the soffits underneath. Older buildings, from before 2000, can have asbestos cement soffits, gutters or downpipes. We don’t carry out asbestos testing, so we flag anything that might contain it for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check. We survey downpipes, fascias and soffits and parapet and box gutters, and people most often book us about brackets that have dropped or snapped and soffits marked by water.

Some older homes in villages like Fyfield are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.

After the visit, you get a written report with photographs, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the gutter, any defects and our written recommendations.

When to book a survey in Fyfield

Gutter brackets work loose or corrode with age. Wet leaves and silt add a lot of weight, and that weight pulls sections out of line. Lose the fall and water gathers in the dip, then overflows.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Leaking or loose downpipes
  • Leaks at the gutter joints
  • Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
  • Hoppers and outlets full of debris

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Nicholas, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Before you book anyone

  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • Are they insured for the work?
  • Whether VAT is added on top
  • How soon the report will arrive

What’s in a roof survey

What we do, step by step

The visit has one job: to see as much of the gutter as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit normally takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Somewhere like Fyfield needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect what can be seen safely, inside and out.

  1. First, we agree the areas to focus on.
  2. Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
  3. Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
  4. Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
  5. Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

Roof by roof

Fascias and soffits

Most gutters are fixed to the fascia, so a rotten fascia can let the gutter drop. Damaged or stained boards are recorded.

Aluminium and other metal gutters

Long metal gutter runs on larger buildings can hide blocked outlets, so we check the outlets carefully.

What a gutter survey looks like in Fyfield

Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.

If you own a rental within reach of Grateley station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.

FAQs for Fyfield

Do you cover smaller places like Fyfield?

Yes, we do. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Fyfield?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only when it is safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

What’s the price of a gutter survey?

The Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard from £250 and the Premium from £400, all with VAT included. For a price for your building, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.

How do I arrange a gutter survey in Fyfield?

It is easiest to call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Let us know the address and a little about the roof. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.

Will you check the drains below ground?

No. We look at above-ground rainwater only down to where the downpipes reach the ground. Where a below-ground drain seems to be the problem, we will tell you.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Fyfield

Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on.

Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. Access is agreed with the tenant ahead of time.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Fyfield

Clearing gutters removes the debris, but it does not tell you why a gutter overflows. We also check the falls, joints, brackets, outlets and downpipes to show whether something else is wrong. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Fyfield, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

Every price we give includes VAT. Prices start from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before booking.
