Your questions about gutter surveys in Ludgershall
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Ludgershall?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Do you cover Ludgershall?
Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Ludgershall is part of that. You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a few details.
Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos testing. Where gutters, downpipes or soffits could be asbestos cement, we flag them so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.
Will you check the drains below ground?
No, CCTV drain work isn’t part of this survey. The survey covers gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and flags signs of a drain problem.
How do I book a survey in Ludgershall?
Just call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.
How many surveys have you done?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
What’s the price of a gutter survey?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. The price depends on the size of the building and how easy the gutters are to see. To get a price, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.
How a gutter survey works in Ludgershall
Eaves gutters at the front of a building are easy to spot but lots of gutters are tucked away. Valley gutters between slopes, gutters behind parapet walls and box or secret gutters can overflow inside the building when they block. We inspect them as far as it is safe to see them using vantage points, the loft space and the roof itself where safe. Hidden gutters are a common source of leaks inside. We survey downpipes, valley gutters and outlets and hoppers, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are cracked or loose downpipes and joints that drip after rain.
Trees around homes in smaller places like Ludgershall drop leaves, twigs and moss onto roofs and into gutters. Blocked gutters overflow and soak the walls below, and moss holds water against tiles. It’s the kind of slow problem a roof report picks up early. Plants growing from a gutter or moss on the tiles are signs worth noting from ground level.
It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Why act early in Ludgershall
Damp walls are sometimes blamed on the wrong thing. If a leaking gutter or downpipe is the source, other work on the wall will not stop it. A gutter survey helps rule the rainwater system in or out. In a smaller place like Ludgershall, wherever a roof is exposed, a loose ridge or flashing doesn’t stay loose for long. Each storm lifts it a little further.
There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
Why us?
- An independent look at the roof
- Satisfaction rate of 98%
- A sub-250g drone, flown with a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- Photographs and a written report every time
Should I look at the roof myself first?
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
What this survey can’t tell you
It’s a careful look at the gutter, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
- Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
- Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.

Useful tips for Ludgershall property owners
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Have overhanging branches cut back
- Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
- Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
- Check for spilling water in a downpour
If anything in the report isn’t clear, ask us. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey comes with an in-person one.
Hidden gutters need clearing too. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but they’re much harder to spot, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.

Gutter surveys around Ludgershall
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them. If your home is older, it is worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St James, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

Signs you need a gutter survey in Ludgershall
Leaves are behind most blocked gutters. Nearby trees drop leaves, twigs and seeds into gutters every autumn and the debris builds up at the outlets. Once an outlet is choked, the gutter fills and overflows.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
- Leaking or loose downpipes
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
- Leaks at the gutter joints
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Ludgershall Castle Primary School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.
What to check before booking
- How long the report takes to arrive
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- What follow-up you get after the report
The survey, step by step
We check the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Parking around Ludgershall is normally easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where applicable.
- We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Before we arrive
- Find any records of previous roof work
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
