Roof leak investigation in Fyfield, Hampshire
An experienced roof surveyor for roof leak investigations in Fyfield. More than 20 years and over 5,000 surveys.
- Stains around a skylight
- Brown rings on upstairs ceilings
- Damp walls below an overflowing gutter
DIY checks: what’s safe
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Roof leak investigations for homes and businesses in Fyfield
Roof leaks rarely show up where you’d expect. Water often travels along timbers or underlay before it finds a way down, so the stain on your ceiling is seldom right under the hole. We follow it back towards where it starts, one likely route at a time. Patching the spot above the stain often misses the real cause. Finding the route first lets the repair go where it is needed. We survey flat roof details, rooflights and dormers and the roof space, and common reasons people get in touch are leaks below a flat extension roof and water that shows only in certain storms.
For a small place like Fyfield, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, plus any earlier repairs. If you have photos of the water coming in, they help as well.
Where we cannot see part of the leaking roof, the report says so. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

Why act early in Fyfield
A leak rarely stays small. Wet timbers start to decay, plaster softens and insulation stops working. Finding the source early keeps the damage down. Around Fyfield, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

Booking your survey
There’s no need for technical words. Just let us know:
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- When you need the report by
- What’s prompted the survey
- Access details, like a loft hatch or a shared roof
Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Different roofs, different checks
Slate and tile slopes
On slate roofs, corroded nails let slates slip. One slipped slate can be enough to cause a leak.
Lead flashings
Wherever a roof meets a wall or stack, a flashing keeps rain out. We check for lead that has lifted, split or slipped.
What this survey can’t tell you
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:
- A promise to find every leak on a single visit
- The repair itself (the investigation finds and reports the cause)
- Faults hidden behind ceilings or boarding
If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- Chimney stacks
- Rooflights and dormers
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Lead flashings
- The roof space
- Slate and tile slopes

The survey, step by step
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you’d like to know. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely. The survey typically takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like Fyfield can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We help you choose the package that suits the leak.
- We agree a date, including weekends.
- The investigation works from the stain back to the roof.
- Where it’s useful and included, we take moisture readings and use thermal imaging.
- You get photos, the likely cause and clear recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear

Your questions about roof leak investigations in Fyfield
Is my home in Fyfield listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Is Fyfield within the area you cover?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.
Why doesn’t the damp patch line up with the hole?
Because water travels. It runs along rafters, battens or underlay before it drips, so the stain may be some distance from where it gets in. We follow the route back instead of guessing.
Will you fix the leak as part of this?
This service finds and reports the cause, not to carry out the repair. With the report, a roofer knows exactly where to look.
When does the report arrive?
That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.
Do you use thermal imaging to find leaks?
Where conditions suit, it can. The best results come after a sunny day, on a dry roof with little wind. Damp areas can hold heat differently from dry ones. We always check what it shows with moisture readings.

Leaks and storm damage in Fyfield
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in. Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.
If you let a flat or house near Grateley station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Nicholas, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.
