About our drone roof survey in South Hayling
Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports like Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If permission is not given, we inspect by other means and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. We survey chimney stacks, fragile roofs and flat roofs on upper floors, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are worn lead at chimneys and walls and ridge and hip pieces working loose.
Older cottages and houses around South Hayling may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

Can I check my roof myself?
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
Airspace, weather and South Hayling roofs
South Hayling is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.
If you look after a building such as Mengham Junior School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. For an older house near a landmark like St Mary's Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Warblington Castle lies about 3.9 miles north, so building around South Hayling goes back a long way. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
Helping us price your survey
A little information up front helps. Please include:
- Access details, like a loft hatch or a shared roof
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
- What kind of property and roof it is
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. For any other survey, just call 07833 053749 or drop us an email when you are ready.
Honest limits
A survey is a careful look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. Its limits include:
- Flights in a restricted zone without permission
- Photos in conditions too poor to fly
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.
Roofs we survey in South Hayling
- Fragile roofs
- Large and complex roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Tall and steep roofs
How the survey changes by roof type
Large commercial roofs
Fragile roof sheets and roof lights can be dangerous to walk on. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.
Steep slate and tile slopes
On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. We can see the extent of it from above.

What we do, step by step
It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit usually takes about one to two hours at most homes, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. A visit to South Hayling is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed in advance. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Getting ready for the survey
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
- Check we can get to the back of the property

Your questions about drone roof surveys in South Hayling
How do I find out if my home in South Hayling is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Is drone flying allowed in South Hayling?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach.
Is South Hayling in your area?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, South Hayling included.
What does the report include?
Written findings with photographs, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend, by urgency where it matters. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
When does the report arrive?
It depends on the package: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. Reports are sent by email.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when you book.
