Gutter survey in Mattingley
We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Mattingley and right across London and South East England. We inspect everything we can see safely from ground level, windows, the roof space and the roof where it is safe. Time on site normally takes an hour or two at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. The written report follows, with photographs and recommendations. We’re frequently asked to look into downpipes that are split or coming away and rotten fascias or stained soffits, across parapet and box gutters, fascias and soffits and outlets and hoppers.
In a village or hamlet like Mattingley, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are frequently old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
Where we cannot see part of the gutter, the report says so. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

What we look for on each type of roof
Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
A London butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter and if it blocks, water can come indoors. It’s inspected as far as safe access allows.
Fascias and soffits
On buildings from before 2000, soffits may be asbestos cement. We flag any that could be for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check.
Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Mattingley
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. With Stratfield Saye House about 3.1 miles north-west, Mattingley sits in an area with a long building history. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
The streets around a church such as Mattingley Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. If you let a flat or house near Hook station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Common questions in Mattingley
I let a flat near Hook station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, letting agents and landlords book with us as well as owners. You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a few details.
Will you come out to Mattingley?
Yes. Mattingley is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
How soon will I get the report?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email, ready to forward.
What happens next?
You will receive the report by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.
What’s the best way to book?
Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.
How it works
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey usually takes an hour or two at most homes, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older rural homes like those around Mattingley can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.
- We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Before we arrive
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent

What we cannot see
It helps to know what a survey won’t do before you book:
- Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods
- Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
- Blockages deep inside downpipes
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check

- Valley gutters
- Fascias and soffits
- Downpipes
- Eaves gutters
- Outlets and hoppers
What happens if roof problems are left?
A dripping joint or sagging bracket will not get better on its own. Every downpour adds to the damage, on walls, timber and sometimes inside. A survey now tells you what needs doing and how urgent it is. In a place like Mattingley, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.
