Gutter survey in Basingstoke
Leaves, moss and silt are the usual reasons gutters block. Buildings near trees collect more and moss from the roof slopes makes it worse. Our survey shows which gutters are blocked or standing full, which outlets and hoppers are choked and whether overflows are working. The photos show you exactly what we found. It’s an easy job to put off, but they rarely get better. We survey eaves gutters, downpipes and valley gutters, and people most often book us about leaves and moss blocking gutters and valley or box gutters that overflow inside.
In a place the size of Basingstoke, street trees and gardens shed leaves into gutters every autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. Hidden valley and parapet gutters can overflow into the house itself. Water from one part of a roof often ends up showing somewhere else entirely. Gutters, outlets and downpipes are worth checking once the leaves have fallen.
You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

What we do, step by step
You don’t need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes about one to two hours at a typical home, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. For a commercial building or block in Basingstoke, roof access is agreed with whoever manages it ahead of the visit. At home, it’s useful to clear a route to the loft and point out any stains or leaks. You then get a report with photographs.
- We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
How to prepare
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Basingstoke questions
How do I find out if my home in Basingstoke is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Is Basingstoke in the area you cover?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Basingstoke as anywhere else.
What will the report tell me?
It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photographs throughout. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.
Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?
Any time of year works. Booking before autumn and winter gives you time to plan, and a wet spell can show where gutters overflow.
How many surveys have you done?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
Are hidden gutters like valleys and box gutters included?
Yes. These gutters often cause leaks indoors when they block so we pay close attention to them. Some may only be partly visible, and the report says so.

Practical tips
A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Some pointers:
- Check the loft with care after heavy rain
- Watch for green marks down the brickwork
- Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
- Watch the gutters during heavy rain
If anything in the report isn’t clear, ask us. With the Standard Survey there’s a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey comes with an in-person one.
Get the gutters cleared every year, and more often if trees overhang the roof. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.
What happens if roof problems are left?
A dripping joint or sagging bracket will not get better on its own. Each heavy rain puts more water where it shouldn’t be on the walls, the fascias and sometimes the rooms inside. Getting it surveyed now shows what needs attention first. In a place with as many rented homes as Basingstoke, small roof faults often turn into tenant complaints. Spotting it early is easier than dealing with water damage in an occupied home.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Basingstoke
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. Historic houses such as The Vyne, about 2.9 miles north, show how far back building in the area around Basingstoke goes. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
For businesses in and around places such as The Malls, knowing the roof’s condition lets you budget for work rather than pay for emergencies. If you own a rental within reach of Basingstoke station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints. The streets around a church like St Michael's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

What we can’t see
Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey will not do:
- Blockages deep inside downpipes
- Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
- The inside of buried drains
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.

What we look for on each type of roof
Box and secret gutters
A box gutter is built into the roof, often behind a parapet, so overflows can end up inside. We inspect them as far as it is safe to see them.
Cast iron gutters
Cracks frequently open on the back of cast iron downpipes, so we check the wall behind for staining.
