Gutter surveys in South Ham

What we are asked to look at in South Ham

Many gutter joints depend on rubber seals or sealant that age. Plastic sections expand and contract with the weather so their joints can start to leak. On cast iron, joints can rust and open up where the paint has failed.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
  • Sagging gutters and loose brackets
  • Blocked outlets and hoppers
  • Gutters overflowing in heavy rain

Living close to Eastrop Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Is VAT included in the price?
  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
  • Are they insured for the work?

What to expect from a roof survey

Gutter survey in South Ham

Leaves, moss and silt are the usual reasons gutters block. Homes close to trees fill their gutters faster, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water, which outlets and hoppers are choked and whether overflows are working. The photographs show you exactly what we found. Blocked gutters are easy to put off, but they rarely get better. We survey valley gutters, eaves gutters and outlets and hoppers, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are hoppers and outlets full of debris and brackets that have dropped or snapped.

Around South Ham, gardens, hedges and nearby trees can mean leaves and moss end up on roofs and in gutters. Blocked gutters overflow and soak the walls below. It’s the kind of slow problem a roof report picks up early. Plants growing from a gutter or moss on the tiles are signs worth noting from ground level.

The report is written in plain words, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put with the most urgent first where relevant.

Different roofs, different checks

Aluminium and other metal gutters

Aluminium and other metal gutters are used on many newer and commercial buildings. Joints, outlets and fixings are the parts we focus on.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Plastic can become brittle with age and crack. We check joints, brackets and the line of each run.

Checking the roof from the ground

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

What this survey can’t tell you

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:

  • What’s hidden inside a downpipe
  • What’s behind fascias and inside walls
  • Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

Will you come out to South Ham?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

When is the best time for a gutter survey?

There is no wrong time. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it is best not to wait as overflowing water can damage walls.

How many surveys have you done?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

Does the report include photographs?

Yes. Photos are part of every report.

Landlords, agents and block managers in South Ham

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work with less disruption.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in South Ham

About 3.5 miles north lies The Vyne, a reminder of how long the area around South Ham has been built on. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.

If you let a flat or house near Basingstoke station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Saint Peter's Church, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

How the survey works

We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take between one and two hours at a typical home, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. In a smaller place like South Ham, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from ground level and the loft can go ahead in most weather.

  1. We ask about overflows, damp or leaks you’ve noticed.
  2. Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
  3. We check hidden gutters, such as valleys and parapets, where it’s safe to see them.
  4. The roof space is checked for water marks if it’s safe to get into.
  5. The findings are written up with photographs and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Leave side gates unlocked
