About our gutter survey in Hound Green

A gutter needs a steady fall towards its outlet or water sits in them. When brackets sag or joints part, water pools, drips and spills over where the gutter dips. We look along each run for sags, gaps and leaking joints and look at the brackets and downpipe clips. Recommendations are written down and prioritised by urgency where relevant. If you are worried about gutters overflowing in heavy rain and downpipes that are split or coming away, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

In a small place like Hound Green, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Honest limits

A survey is a close look at the gutter, but it cannot do everything. Its limits include:

  • What’s hidden inside a downpipe
  • Hidden sections we can’t view safely
  • Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Downpipes
  • Eaves gutters
  • Valley gutters
  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Fascias and soffits

Checking the roof from the ground

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Before and after the survey

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:

  • Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
  • Don’t leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
  • Check the loft with care after heavy rain
  • Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed

For let and shared buildings, the report can go on file to help plan maintenance. The photographs help when you explain the work to others.

Get the gutters cleared every year, and more often if trees overhang the roof. The best time is typically after the leaves have dropped. Clean gutters can do their job.

Hound Green: your questions answered

How do I find out if my home in Hound Green is listed?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Is Hound Green within the area you cover?

Yes, Hound Green is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

When does the report arrive?

That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.

Do I need to be at home?

It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It is included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.

Could my damp wall be caused by the gutters?

We check whether rainwater from the gutters is reaching the wall from overflows, leaking joints or loose downpipes. We can’t see inside walls, so we report on what’s visible.

Why get it checked now?

Small gutter faults rarely fix themselves. Every downpour adds to the damage on the walls, the fascias and sometimes the rooms inside. A survey now tells you what needs doing and how urgent it is. Matching old materials, like handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.

How it works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. It typically takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Cottages and farmhouses around Hound Green often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
  2. Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
  3. Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
  4. Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
  5. Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

Before the survey

  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
  • If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Hound Green

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Historic houses such as Stratfield Saye House, about 2.4 miles north-west, show how far back building in the area around Hound Green goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

If you let a flat or house near Hook station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.

Common roof problems in Hound Green

Gutter brackets work loose or corrode with age. Wet leaves and silt add a lot of weight, and that weight pulls sections out of line. Once the fall is lost, water sits at the low point and spills over.

People normally book a survey when they’ve noticed something like this:

  • Blocked outlets and hoppers
  • Downpipes that are split or coming away
  • Gutters packed with leaves or moss
  • Soffits marked by water

If you live in an older home near Mattingley Church, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • How soon the report will arrive
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
