Thermal roof survey in Hound Green: what you get
What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. A sunny day before the survey, a dry roof surface and little wind all help. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We talk through the forecast when booking, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. We survey commercial roofs, pitched roof slopes and insulated roof spaces, and people most frequently book us about gaps in loft insulation and damp that repairs haven’t cured.
Some older homes in villages like Hound Green are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent, whichever applies.

When you need someone else
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you before booking. What a survey covers and does not.

Thermal roof surveys in Hound Green: local notes
If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
Take an older house close to Mattingley Church: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Stratfield Saye House, about 2.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Hound Green. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Hound Green
Is Hound Green within the area you cover?
Yes. Hound Green is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.
Do you cover Hound Green?
Yes. We work right across London and the South East, and Hound Green is part of that. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a few details, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?
Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. It shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.
What does a thermal roof survey show?
The camera records how the surface temperature varies. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat loss. We check what it shows with moisture readings.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
It is part of the Premium Survey, from £400. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.
What we look for on each type of roof
GRP fibreglass roofs
GRP roofs are laid over timber boards, so trapped moisture can affect the deck. The camera can help show where to look.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s happening underneath. We back up what the camera shows with a look in the loft where we can.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the visit with that in mind.
Landlords and agents in Hound Green book surveys as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photographs, useful for planning maintenance.
Before and after the survey
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
- Do not switch the heating off ahead of the visit
- Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
We note the weather and surface conditions, and how they may have affected the results. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.
After repairs or a new covering, a later survey can confirm things are dry, when the conditions are suitable.
The survey, step by step
You don’t need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes between one and two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Rural addresses near Hound Green can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- We look at the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it is safe.
- Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Check pets are kept safely away

Advice
Should I look at the roof myself first?
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
