Independent thermal roof surveys in Heckfield

About our thermal roof survey in Heckfield

A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated areas can stand out on the images. The difference shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and cold outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. It is not an energy rating or a heat loss calculation. We survey flat roofs, loft conversions and ceilings below the roof, and people most often book us about gaps in loft insulation and damp around roof outlets and upstands.

Somewhere as small as Heckfield, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from ground level. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

The report is written in plain words, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

Heckfield questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Heckfield?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Heckfield?

Yes, Heckfield is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.

How quickly is the report sent?

Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. Mention any deadline when booking.

What conditions are best for thermal imaging?

Conditions on the day affect the results. A sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air all help. Rain, wind and heavy cloud can weaken the patterns, so we talk through the forecast when booking.

Do you use drones?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

Will the camera show exactly where the water is?

The camera does not see water itself. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, but we check each finding with moisture readings.

What will the report tell me?

It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, backed by photos. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely.

Roof by roof

Single-ply and EPDM roofs

On big single-ply roofs, the camera helps show where to take readings. That makes the survey more focused.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Junctions where roofs meet walls, parapets and valleys are common places for water to get in. Thermal imaging can help show damp patterns around them.

Tips from our surveys

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:

  • Make sure the loft can be reached safely
  • Leave the roof to people with safe access
  • Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey

Where a pattern can’t be confirmed, the report says what could help, such as electronic leak detection or opening up a small area.

Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.

The survey, step by step

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes about one to two hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Around Heckfield, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.

When you need someone else

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:

  • A structural engineer’s assessment
  • Confirming water without moisture readings
  • What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Loft conversions
  • Commercial roofs
  • Flat roofs

Can I check my roof myself?

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Airspace, weather and Heckfield roofs

A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help. The wider area around Heckfield has a long history of building, with Stratfield Saye House about 1.7 miles west. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

If you look after a building such as Daneshill School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. If you live in an older home near Church of St Michael, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.
