Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Crofton

Crofton is within about 2 miles of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, while driving rain finds any gap. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, ideally before any re-roofing is planned.

If you run a business near Fareham Shopping Centre, a roof report helps plan work around trading rather than after a leak. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Peel Common Mission Church, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

Crofton is about 1 mile east of Stubbington, in Hampshire. Whether the building in Crofton is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed. Our area takes in places right across Hampshire.

Surveys in PO14 and PO13 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. You will find streets such as Mark's Road, Gosport Road and Newgate Lane. Nearby, we also carry out chimney surveys in Peel Common (1 mile east), Rowner (1 mile east), Bridgemary (1 mile east), Lee-on-the-Solent (1 mile south) and Fareham (2 miles north). We also work in nearby towns such as Havant (10 miles east), Eastleigh (12 miles north-west), Horndean (10 miles north-east), Totton (15 miles north-west), Chandler's Ford (14 miles north-west) and Hedge End (8 miles north-west).

How a chimney survey works in Crofton

Our survey covers the structure of the stack and its weathering details. It’s not a flue inspection, a chimney sweep or a gas safety inspection. If you use a fire or a gas appliance, the flue should be checked by a sweep or a Gas Safe registered engineer as appropriate. We will tell you if we see anything that suggests they should take a look. We survey brick chimney stacks, flaunching and chimney breasts, and people most often book us about frost-damaged brickwork on the stack and mortar washing out of the joints.

Somewhere as small as Crofton, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, frequently with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.

Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Do you need a chimney survey in Crofton?

Lots of homes have redundant stacks. If a stack is capped or blocked without ventilation, moisture can build up inside. Damp patches can appear on chimney breasts even when nothing is leaking.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Damp patches on chimney breasts
  • Signs that a stack is leaning
  • Flashings pulling away from the stack
  • Pots or cowls that look unsafe

For landlords with property near Fareham station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.

What to check before booking

  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • What follow-up you get after the report
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?

Crofton questions

Is Crofton within the area you cover?

Yes, Crofton is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

How do I find out if my home in Crofton is listed?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

What does a roof survey cost?

Our price is from £150, including VAT. You’ll know the price for the job before booking. For a price, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

What does the report include?

It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, backed by photographs. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.

Do you look in the loft space?

Usually, if there is one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof frequently shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.

How long does the survey take?

Expect it to take about one to two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. The written report follows by email.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

What this survey cannot tell you

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:

  • A structural engineer’s assessment
  • Whether the flue is safe to use
  • Gas safety checks, which need a Gas Safe registered engineer

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.

What we look at

  • Shared and party-wall stacks
  • Brick chimney stacks
  • Lead flashings
  • Flaunching
  • Chimney pots and cowls
  • Chimney breasts

How it works

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect between one and two hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Crofton often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. You tell us how many stacks there are and any damp or problems you’ve noticed.
  2. The stacks are looked at from the ground, from windows and from other safe vantage points.
  3. We check and photograph the pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
  4. Inside, we look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there’s safe access.
  5. The findings are written up with photos and recommendations and emailed to you.

How to prepare

  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Let us know about parking near the property
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Checking the roof from the ground

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That is where a survey comes in.
