Chimney survey in Elson, Hampshire
Chimney surveys in Elson from an independent, experienced roof surveyor. More than 20 years and over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
- Frost-damaged brickwork on the stack
- Mortar washing out of the joints
- A chimney out of line
What a survey costs
Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Basic, Standard or Premium
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.
Booking your survey
You do not need to know any roofing terms. It is enough to let us know:
- What’s prompted the survey
- Dates you are working to, such as exchange
- Anything about access we should know
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
To book a survey, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us the address and what’s prompted the survey. You will know the price before anything is booked.
How a chimney survey works in Elson
Our survey covers the structure of the stack and its weathering details. It isn’t a flue inspection, a sweep or a gas safety check. If you use a fire or a gas appliance, the flue should be checked by a sweep or a Gas Safe registered engineer as appropriate. We’ll tell you if we see anything that suggests they should take a look. We survey shared and party-wall stacks, chimney breasts and brick chimney stacks, and common reasons people get in touch are flashings pulling away from the stack and gaps in the mortar around the pots.
Around Elson, gardens, hedges and nearby trees can mean leaves and moss end up on roofs and in gutters. Blocked gutters overflow and soak the walls below, and moss holds water against tiles. A report spots that kind of slow problem before it becomes damp inside. Plants growing from a gutter or moss on the tiles are signs worth noting from the ground.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

Checking the roof from ground level
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
What we look for on each type of roof
Lead flashings
Where the chimney meets the roof slopes, lead flashings keep water out. The survey looks at whether the lead is tight, sound and well fixed.
Chimney pots and cowls
A loose or cracked pot can fall from height. We record their condition with photographs.
Chimney surveys around Elson
Elson lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so the council is the place to ask.
If you let a flat or house near Portsmouth Harbour station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints. If you live in an older home near Church of St Thomas, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

When to book a survey in Elson
Stacks that were used for open fires for many years can weaken from the inside. Mortar can deteriorate unevenly from flue gases and moisture, which is one reason stacks start to lean.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- A stack that appears to lean
- Lifted or split lead flashings
- Unused flues sealed without airflow
- Eroded joints in the brickwork
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Elson Infant School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

Your questions about chimney surveys in Elson
Will you come out to Elson?
Yes, Elson is covered. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Does being near the coast affect roofs in Elson?
It can do. Within about 2 miles of the sea, as Elson is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.
When does the report arrive?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email, ready to forward.
What causes damp on a chimney breast?
There are a few common causes: cracked flaunching, worn pointing, failed flashings, uncapped pots, or damp trapped in an unventilated stack. Our survey checks each of these and records the likely cause.
How much is a survey?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. You’ll know the price for your roof before booking, and it depends on the roof’s size, access and the package you choose. For a price, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We look at the parts we’re given access to, and the report makes that clear.
What does a chimney survey cover?
We check the pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, brickwork and flashings. We also check chimney breasts and the stack in the loft space where we can reach. You get a written report with photos.
Why act early in Elson
A small amount of repointing or new flaunching is usually a modest job. Left for a few winters, frost and water can loosen pots and bricks and the job gets bigger. Homes in smaller places like Elson can face more weather, so a loose ridge or verge soon lets rain in. Wind gets under it and lifts more.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
What you get with us

What we do, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can safely be seen is inspected, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. For a survey in Elson, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. Let us know about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- We check every stack from wherever it can safely be seen.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there is access.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.
How to prepare
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
