Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Privett
Many homes have chimneys that are no longer used. A disused stack still needs looking after. Capping a stack without ventilation can trap moisture and lead to damp inside. Our survey looks at how each unused stack has been capped and checks the breasts for damp. You get photos of each stack and our recommendations. If you’ve noticed bricks with flaking faces and damp patches on chimney breasts, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
In a smaller place like Privett, some roofs stand more exposed to wind and rain than in a built-up town. That weather tells first on ridges, verges, chimneys and flashings. A proper look shows whether anything has started to loosen. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

The survey, step by step
A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. It usually takes between one and two hours for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. Parking around Privett is usually easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where it applies.
- You tell us how many stacks there are and any damp or problems you’ve noticed.
- Each chimney is viewed from wherever it can be seen safely.
- We check and photograph the pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- Where there’s safe access, we check the stack in the loft and the chimney breasts for damp.
- You get a written report with photographs and our recommendations.
How to prepare
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Leave a clear route to the loft

Chimney surveys around Privett
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Privett, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, while driving rain finds any gap. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
Shop and office owners around Tricorn Centre may find that a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks. If you own a rental within reach of Portsmouth Harbour station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.
Privett is about 1 mile south-west of Gosport, in Hampshire. Bookings from Privett are handled just like any other: a call or an email, a price, then a date. Our area takes in places right across Hampshire.

Within a short drive, we also cover Havant (9 miles north-east), Eastleigh (14 miles north-west), Fareham (4 miles north), Horndean (10 miles north-east), Hedge End (10 miles north-west) and Waterlooville (8 miles north-east).

For rail, the closest station is Portsmouth Harbour station, roughly 2.3 miles east. Well-known places in the area include Tricorn Centre (3.1 miles east) and Search (1.5 miles east). For a walk, there’s West of the River Alver and Portsdown Hill.
Why get it checked now?
Damp in a chimney breast typically gets worse while the cause is left. It can stain walls and damage plaster. Finding the cause means the right work can be planned. Around Privett, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls, particularly where trees overhang. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

What this survey can’t tell you
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Hidden sides of a shared stack
- What’s inside the brickwork or behind render, without opening up
- The inside of the flue, which needs a sweep or flue specialist
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will suggest the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.
What we check
- Brick chimney stacks
- Lead flashings
- Shared and party-wall stacks
- Chimney breasts
- Flaunching
- Chimney pots and cowls
Signs you need a chimney survey in Privett
Aerials and dishes are often fixed to stacks. Their weight and the wind on them can loosen bricks and pointing. Any fixings on the stack are checked and recorded.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Unused flues sealed without airflow
- Mortar washing out of the joints
- Signs that a stack is leaning
- Flaunching that has broken away
Anyone responsible for a site like Gomer Infant School will know that large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

Privett questions
Is the coastal weather around Privett hard on roofs?
Generally, yes: wind and salt air take more of a toll near the sea. Exposed details such as ridges, verges, flashings and metal fixings are the ones to watch.
I let a flat near Portsmouth Harbour station. Can you check the roof?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details.
Do I need to be at home?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when booking.
Is a chimney survey the same as a flue inspection?
No. Our survey covers the outside of the stack and the roof around it. The flue should be checked by a sweep, or by a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas appliances.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
Do you work in Privett?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, Privett included.
Practical tips
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Have the flue swept and checked if you use the fire
- Have brackets on the chimney checked
- Never climb onto the roof to look at a chimney
- Find out whether changes to a stack need permission
If the stack is shared, you can pass the report to your neighbour. The photos show the problem and which side it’s on from the viewpoints we used.
Watch for damp or staining on chimney breasts. The sooner damp is spotted, the easier the cause is to find.
