Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Hyde
A chimney survey looks at the stack and everything around it: the pots and cowls, the flaunching on top, the pointing, the brickwork and the flashings where it meets the roof. Inside, we check chimney breasts and the stack in the loft where it is safe to reach. You get a written report with photos and our recommendations. We survey single stacks on houses and groups of stacks on bigger buildings. We survey brick chimney stacks, shared and party-wall stacks and flaunching, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are a stack that appears to lean and gaps where the stack meets the roof.
Trees around homes in smaller places like Hyde drop leaves, twigs and moss onto roofs and into gutters. Blocked gutters overflow and soak the walls below, and moss holds water against tiles. It’s the kind of slow problem a roof report picks up early. Plants growing from a gutter or moss on the tiles are signs worth noting from the ground.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

How it works
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit normally takes an hour or two at a typical home, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Homes around Hyde frequently have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Mention any side of the property we can’t get to. The loft, where there’s safe access, completes the picture.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- We check every stack from wherever it can safely be seen.
- We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there’s access.
- The report, with photos and recommendations, is emailed to you.

Prices for chimney surveys in Hyde
Several things affect the price of a survey:
- Which survey package you book
- How big the roof is
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
Our price is from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, access and the package you choose.
Helping us price your survey
The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, tell us:
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Tips from our surveys
A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Our tips:
- Check with the council before altering a stack in a conservation area or on a listed building
- Check that disused chimneys can still breathe
- Do not use a ladder to reach the stack yourself
- Glance at the stacks from the street now and then
If the report recommends a structural engineer, a sweep or a Gas Safe registered engineer, it will say why. That helps you brief them.
Watch for damp or staining on chimney breasts. Early signs are easier to trace.
What you can safely check yourself
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
Landlords, agents and building managers in Hyde and across Hampshire can book any of our surveys. To discuss a property or a block, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Hyde homes and their roofs
An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
Take an older house close to St Bartholomew's Church: the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. Living close to St. Cross Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. If you own a rental within reach of Winchester station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.
Hyde is about 1 mile north of Winchester, in Hampshire. Surveys in Hyde work the same way as everywhere we cover: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. Hyde is one of the places in Hampshire where we work for chimney surveys. Southampton is in our area too.

Around Hyde
Locally, jobs take us to homes and businesses close to Peter Symonds College, Leigh House Hospital and The King Alfred pub, among other places. There’s a railway station in Hyde itself: Winchester station. Nearby you’ll also find Winchester Castle (0.6 miles south-west) and Royal Observer Corps Museum (0.5 miles north). Open spaces near Hyde include Winnall Moors and Twyford Down.
Different roofs, different checks
Lead flashings
Some older stacks have mortar fillets instead of lead. They tend to crack, so we check them closely.
Brick stacks
Brick stacks rely on sound pointing to keep water out. We check the bricks for spalling and the joints for erosion.
Common questions in Hyde
Is Hyde within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
I let a flat near Winchester station. Can you check the roof?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the details.
Do you inspect the flue?
No. We survey the stack and its weathering, not the flue. For the flue, you will need a sweep or, for gas, a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Which parts of the chimney do you look at?
The survey covers the pots and cowls, the flaunching, the pointing, the bricks and the flashings. Inside, we look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there is safe access. You get a written report with photos.
How long is the visit?
Most surveys take between one and two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. The report follows by email.
How much is a survey?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package, confirmed before anything is booked.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report, and it does not include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.
