- Redundant stacks capped without ventilation
How a chimney survey works in Knights Enham
Our survey covers the structure of the stack and its weathering details. It’s not a flue inspection, a chimney sweep or a gas safety inspection. If you use a fire or a gas appliance, the flue should be checked by a sweep or a Gas Safe registered engineer as appropriate. If something we see points to the flue, we’ll say so. If you’ve noticed a chimney out of line and cracked or missing flaunching, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on chimney pots and cowls, chimney breasts and shared and party-wall stacks alike.
Somewhere as small as Knights Enham, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, frequently with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs frequently need the most attention.
After the visit, you get a written report with photos, sent by email. It explains the condition of the chimney stack, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Questions from Knights Enham
I let a flat near Andover station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, that is a common request. We just need to know who will give access, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Knights Enham?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
How many surveys have you done?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it’s applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.
When does the report arrive?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.
What happens after the survey?
You’ll get the report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes, plenty. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, so you can see what we mean.

When to book a survey in Knights Enham
The flaunching on top of a stack holds the pots in place and sheds water. Cracked flaunching lets water in, and each winter makes it worse. Loose pots can follow.
Look out for signs like these:
- Flaunching that has broken away
- Damaged chimney pots and cowls
- Damp on a chimney breast inside
- Eroded joints in the brickwork
Landlords with a home close to Andover station may find that knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.
Questions to ask before booking
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- Whether the price includes VAT
- Will the report include photos?
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
For landlords and managing agents
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, with the most urgent items set out first.
Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work with less disruption.
How it works
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes an hour or two at most homes, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. For a village or hamlet like Knights Enham, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- First we talk through the stacks, their history and any problems.
- We check every stack from wherever it can be seen safely.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there’s access.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.
Before the survey
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
Booking a survey
Booking is simple: just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and give us some details about the property and we will explain which survey suits. The price is agreed up front.

Practical tips
Getting the most from a chimney survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:
- Remove aerials or dishes from the stack if they’re no longer needed
- File photos of the stacks with your home records
- Ask for ventilated caps on redundant stacks
- Have the flue swept and checked if you use the fire
Where another specialist is needed, such as a structural engineer or sweep, we explain why. It gives them a clear starting point.
Look at your chimneys from ground level now and then, particularly after strong winds. With binoculars, you can often see cracked flaunching or lifted lead.
Checking the roof from ground level
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Knights Enham
An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of St Michael and All Angels, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. If you look after a building like Roman Way Primary School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Areas we can’t view from safe positions
