Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Blissford
We inspect chimneys from wherever they can be seen safely: the ground, nearby windows and higher points, and the loft space where it is safe. With our Premium Survey, a drone inspection is included where applicable. If we cannot see part of the stack, the report makes that clear. Every defect we find is photographed and described in plain words. If you’re worried about a stack that appears to lean and mortar washing out of the joints, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
In a village or hamlet like Blissford, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it’s normally the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Different roofs, different checks
Flaunching
Flaunching is the mortar on top of a stack that holds the pots and sheds water. Cracks in it let water into the stack.
Chimney pots and cowls
For unused flues, we check whether caps or cowls allow ventilation. Capping without ventilation can trap moisture.
What a chimney survey looks like in Blissford
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Breamore House, about 3.8 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Blissford. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you live in an older home near Church of the Holy Ascension, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Prices for chimney surveys in Blissford
Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.
Getting in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
- Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
Unsure which package suits your roof? It is easiest to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We’ll explain the options and the price.
Honest limits
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- The inside of the flue, which needs a sweep or flue specialist
- Areas we can’t view from safe positions
- Conditions inside walls
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
Roof types and parts we check
- Flaunching
- Brick chimney stacks
- Shared and party-wall stacks
- Chimney pots and cowls
- Lead flashings
- Chimney breasts
When to book a survey in Blissford
Flaunching is the mortar bed that holds the pots and throws water off the top. Cracked flaunching lets water in, and each winter makes it worse. In time, the pots can become loose.
We’re often asked to look at:
- Spalled or crumbling bricks
- Loose, cracked or missing pots
- Damp on a chimney breast inside
- Eroded joints in the brickwork
Take a building like Hyde Church of England Primary School: large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
- What experience they bring
- What exactly goes into their report
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
Common questions in Blissford
Will you come out to Blissford?
Yes, Blissford is covered. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Do you cover Blissford?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Is it a problem to have an unused chimney?
It depends on its condition and your plans. The survey shows its condition and how it’s been capped. In a conservation area or on a listed building, changes may need consent.
How soon will I get the report?
Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, tell us when you book.
What causes damp on a chimney breast?
It can come from several places: cracked flaunching, worn pointing, failed flashings, uncapped pots, or damp trapped in an unventilated stack. Our survey checks each of these and records the likely cause.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Just say which days work for you.
Will you check the chimney is safe to use with a fire?
No. Our survey covers the outside of the stack and the roof around it. The flue should be checked by a sweep, or by a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas appliances.
How the survey works
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes between one and two hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Somewhere as small as Blissford, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there’s access.
- The report, with photographs and recommendations, is emailed to you.
Before the survey
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Keep pets in another room
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
Booking a survey
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine, and please do not climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Advice
What you can safely check yourself
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
