Chimney survey in West Green: what you get
If a chimney looks out of line, it’s worth getting it checked. A stack may lean because the mortar on one side has weakened, which can happen over many years of use. We record the lean and the condition of the brickwork and pointing. Where it may be a structural concern, we’ll recommend a structural engineer. If you’ve noticed bricks with flaking faces and lifted or split lead flashings, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on brick chimney stacks, chimney breasts and lead flashings alike.
Somewhere as small as West Green, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. We report on everything that’s safely in view, and thatch is a specialist material. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly.

For landlords and managing agents
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps with budgets and planning.
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work.
When you need someone else
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:
- Parts of the stack that can’t be seen safely or belong to a neighbour we can’t access
- Whether a stack needs rebuilding on structural grounds
- The inside of the flue, which needs a sweep or flue specialist
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will recommend the right survey. What our survey covers.
What we check
- Shared and party-wall stacks
- Lead flashings
- Brick chimney stacks
- Flaunching
- Chimney breasts
- Chimney pots and cowls
Why act early in West Green
Before deciding what to do with a redundant stack, a survey shows how it’s doing. In a conservation area or on a listed building, changes may need permission from the council, so check with them first. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 inc. VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What happens on the day
The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the chimney stack as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit normally takes between one and two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. For a village or hamlet like West Green, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect what can be seen safely, inside and out.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- We look at every stack from wherever it can be seen safely.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there’s access.
- The report, with photographs and recommendations, is emailed to you.
Before the survey
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

Useful tips for West Green property owners
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:
- Check your stacks from the ground after strong winds
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Leave close inspection to people with safe access
- File photos of the stacks with your home records
You can send the report to roofers or builders for quotes. Because everyone is pricing the same findings, the quotes are easier to compare.
Look at your chimneys from the ground now and then, particularly after strong winds. With binoculars, you can often see cracked flaunching or lifted lead.

Checking the roof from the ground
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we check the roof.
You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Chimney surveys around West Green
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Stratfield Saye House, about 4.6 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around West Green. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years.
If you run a business near Hart Shopping Centre, knowing the roof’s condition lets you budget for work rather than pay for emergencies. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St Mary's Church, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Greenfields Junior School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.

Questions from West Green
Can a landlord with a rental near Winchfield station book a roof survey?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and what you need, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Is my home in West Green listed or in a conservation area?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
Do you cover West Green?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and that includes West Green.
How do you inspect a chimney without scaffolding?
We use safe viewpoints rather than climbing onto the stack. Where applicable, our Premium Survey adds a drone inspection for a closer view. Any area we couldn’t view is noted.
What will the report tell me?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, backed by photographs. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too, so you know exactly what was covered.
What does a chimney survey cover?
Every part of the stack we can see from safe positions: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and flashings. We also note leaning, redundant stacks and damp inside.
