How a chimney survey works in East Meon
If a chimney looks out of line, it’s worth getting it checked. A stack may lean because the mortar on one side has weakened, which can happen over many years of use. We record the lean and the condition of the brickwork and pointing. Where it may be a structural concern, we will recommend a structural engineer. We survey flaunching, brick chimney stacks and chimney pots and cowls, and people most often book us about damaged chimney pots and cowls and damp on a chimney breast inside.
In a small place like East Meon, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are frequently where weather gets in first.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What we need to know
Before you get in touch, it helps to have:
- What made you get in touch
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- The address and postcode of the property
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
Most bookings start with a short call: call 07833 053749 or use the contact form, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.
Roofs, chimneys and gutters in East Meon
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it is frequently the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. If your home is older, it is worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.
If you live in an older home near Church of All Saints, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. Anyone responsible for a site like East Meon Church of England Controlled Primary School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. If you own a rental within reach of Petersfield station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.

Different roofs, different checks
Lead flashings
Over time, lead can lift or come away from the brickwork. Any loose or split flashings are recorded.
Rendered stacks
Water can get in through cracks and then struggle to dry out. Cracks are photographed and noted.
Can I check my roof myself?
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
FAQs for East Meon
Is my home in East Meon listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Petersfield station?
Of course. We just need to know who will give access, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.
What does a chimney survey cover?
We check the pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, brickwork and flashings. Inside, we look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there is safe access. Everything is written up with photos.
Do you cover East Meon for chimney surveys?
Yes. We survey roofs in East Meon and the rest of Hampshire. For a price, call 07833 053749 or email us.
How many surveys have you done?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Will you go up on the roof?
Not unless it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.
What we can’t see
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:
- Structural calculations for a leaning stack
- Whether the flue is safe to use
- Hidden sides of a shared stack

How the survey works
Before we start, tell us why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Rural addresses near East Meon can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- We look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft space.
- The report, with photographs and recommendations, is emailed to you.
How to prepare
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
