Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Hensting
A chimney survey is about the outside of the stack and the roof around it. It is not a flue inspection, a chimney sweep or a gas safety inspection. If you use a fire or a gas appliance, the flue should be checked by a sweep or a Gas Safe registered engineer as appropriate. If something we see points to the flue, we will say so. We’re often asked to look into redundant stacks capped without ventilation and a stack that appears to lean, across shared and party-wall stacks, lead flashings and chimney pots and cowls.
In a small place like Hensting, many roofs stand in the open, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Local roofs in Hensting
Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
Take an older house close to Church of the Holy Trinity: the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

What happens if roof problems are left?
Before deciding what to do with a redundant stack, a survey shows how it is doing. Changes to stacks in conservation areas or on listed buildings may need consent, so check with them first. Around Hensting, older homes frequently have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the addresses.
Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget.
The survey, step by step
It is useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take between one and two hours for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. Older roofs in small places like Hensting can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there is access.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.
How to prepare
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Signs you need a chimney survey in Hensting
Lots of homes have redundant stacks. A stack sealed without ventilation can trap damp. Damp patches can appear on chimney breasts even when nothing is leaking.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Staining on walls around the chimney
- Eroded joints in the brickwork
- Cracked or missing flaunching
- Unused flues sealed without airflow
Landlords with a home close to Shawford station may find that a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.
What to check before booking
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- Whether you get a written report with photos
What a chimney survey does not cover
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- Gas safety checks, which need a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Whether a stack needs rebuilding on structural grounds
- Whether the flue is safe to use
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Hensting: your questions answered
Do you cover smaller places like Hensting?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hensting?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.
What’s the best way to book?
To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or email us with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.
Can you survey at the weekend?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days when booking.
Will I get photos?
Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.
