Chimney Survey in Tangley
Chimney surveys around Tangley, with findings in writing and pictures to back them up. Book a weekday or weekend visit.
- Unused flues sealed without airflow
- Gaps where the stack meets the roof
- Mortar washing out of the joints
What you can safely check yourself
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That’s where a survey comes in.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Tangley
A damp patch on a chimney breast does not always come from the same place. It might come in at the top, through worn pointing or porous bricks, or where the flashings meet the roof. Condensation inside an unventilated stack is another common cause. We check each possibility and record what we find. You then know where to start. Typical surveys look at unused flues sealed without airflow and worn or missing pointing, on shared and party-wall stacks, chimney breasts and flaunching.
Village roofs frequently face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.
The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Tips from our surveys
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Never climb onto the roof to look at a chimney
- Check your stacks from ground level after strong winds
- Have the flue swept and checked if you use the fire
- Check with the council before altering a stack in a conservation area or on a listed building
Once we’ve been, the findings are written up with photos. It covers the pots, flaunching, pointing, brickwork and flashings, and any damp we found inside. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Get small mortar repairs done while they’re small. Small repairs now can save bigger work later.
The survey, step by step
On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a hamlet or village like Tangley, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- First we talk through the stacks, their history and any problems.
- We check every stack from wherever it can be seen safely.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there’s access.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.
Before the survey
- Check the loft hatch can be reached
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed

Advice
When you need someone else
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Whether a stack needs rebuilding on structural grounds
- Areas we cannot view from safe positions
- Whether the flue is safe to use
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Flaunching
- Lead flashings
- Shared and party-wall stacks
- Chimney pots and cowls
- Chimney breasts
- Brick chimney stacks
What we look for on each type of roof
Brick stacks
Brick stacks rely on sound pointing to keep water out. We check the bricks for spalling and the joints for erosion.
Chimney pots and cowls
On redundant flues, we check how the pots are capped. Capping without ventilation can trap moisture.
Tangley questions
Is my home in Tangley listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
I let a flat near Andover station. Can you check the roof?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the details.
How many surveys have you done?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
Will you check the chimney is safe to use with a fire?
No. A flue inspection, sweep or gas safety check is a separate job. We check the stack, pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, and damp inside and flag anything that suggests the flue needs a look.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.
Chimney surveys in Tangley: local notes
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.
If you let a flat or house near Andover station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.
