Local roofs in Stroud
Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, before anyone quotes for re-roofing. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it’s often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
Anyone responsible for a site like Langrish Primary School will know that large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. If you own a rental within reach of Petersfield station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.

How a chimney survey works in Stroud
Damp on a chimney breast can have several causes. Water may be getting in at the top through cracked flaunching or an uncapped pot, through the brickwork, or at the flashings. Moisture trapped inside a stack with no ventilation can also cause damp. Our survey checks each of these and records the likely cause. That points the work in the right direction. We survey brick chimney stacks, chimney pots and cowls and chimney breasts, and common reasons people get in touch are gaps where the stack meets the roof and bricks with flaking faces.
Somewhere as small as Stroud, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it is normally the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Before and after the survey
Getting the most from a chimney survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:
- Remove aerials or dishes from the stack if they’re no longer needed
- File photos of the stacks with your home records
- Check your stacks from ground level after strong winds
- Use a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas appliances
Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It covers the pots, flaunching, pointing, brickwork and flashings, and any damp we found inside. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Have aerial and dish brackets on the stack checked and taken off if they’re no longer needed. Less load on the stack means less strain in wind.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf. Access is agreed with the tenant ahead of time.
Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client, photos included.
Stroud: your questions answered
Can a landlord with a rental near Petersfield station book a roof survey?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us with the details, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Will you come out to Stroud?
Yes, Stroud is covered. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.
Our stack is shared. Can you still survey it?
Yes. Many houses share stacks with a neighbour. We record the stack as far as we can see it and flag anything on the neighbour’s side.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We check the roof, not the whole building, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you when booking.
Signs you need a chimney survey in Stroud
Flashings seal the gap where a stack passes through the roof. They can lift in wind, crack with age or pull out of the mortar joints. When flashings fail, water frequently shows up in the loft or on the chimney breast. Lead flashings can also be stolen.
It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Redundant stacks capped without ventilation
- Lifted or split lead flashings
- Cracked or missing flaunching
- Pots or cowls that look unsafe
For an older house near a landmark such as Stroud Mission Church, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.
Questions to ask before booking
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- What the report includes, and whether it has photos
- Whether VAT is added on top
- What experience they bring
What this survey can’t tell you
No survey can tell you everything, and it’s better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- Whether a gas appliance or its flue is safe
- The inside of the flue, which needs a sweep or flue specialist
- Whether a stack needs rebuilding on structural grounds
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll recommend the right survey. The full list of what we check.

Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes about one to two hours for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. If you have questions on the day, just ask. - We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- We check every stack from wherever it can safely be seen.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there is access.
