Roof leak investigation in Stroud
Roof leaks rarely show up where you’d expect. It can run along a rafter, a batten or the underlay before it drips, so a ceiling stain is rarely directly below the cause. Our leak investigation traces it back. A repair aimed only at the stain can miss the cause entirely. Finding the route first lets the repair go where it is needed. We’re often asked to look into drips from nail tips in a cold loft and stains around a skylight, across lead flashings, valleys and parapet gutters and the roof space.
Being in a small place like Stroud makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: the journey and access are just planned beforehand. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. If you have photographs of the water coming in, they help as well.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

What we look for on each type of roof
Slate and tile slopes
Ridge and hip tiles can loosen as their mortar cracks. Water then gets in along the top of the roof.
Chimney stacks
A stack has several possible ways in for rain. We check each one as far as we can safely see.
How the survey works
Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, though a hard-to-trace leak can take longer. You’re welcome to ask questions while we are there. Cottages and farmhouses around Stroud frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.
- We start with what you’ve seen: where the stain is and when it gets worse.
- The visit starts indoors, at the stain and in the loft.
- We check the likely entry points outside, like flashings, valleys, chimneys and gutters.
- Where it helps, we take moisture readings and use thermal imaging.
- We email a report with photographs, the likely entry point and recommendations.
Before the survey
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
Arrange a survey
A quick phone call is typically the easiest start: call 07833 053749 or drop us an email, and we will ask about the building and what you need. You will have a price before anything is arranged.
Advice
When you need someone else
This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- The repair itself (the investigation finds and reports the cause)
- Plumbing leaks that look like roof leaks
- A structural engineer’s report
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers

What affects the price in Stroud
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before booking. This is what makes a difference:
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- House, block, shop or office
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
Roof leak investigation starts from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we can help you choose.
Helping us price your survey
We will usually ask about:
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- The property’s address and postcode
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
We confirm the exact price before you book, so you know the cost up front. Prices start from £150, including VAT. For a price for your roof, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
Questions from Stroud
Do you cover Stroud?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Is Stroud within the area you cover?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Yes, where it applies and safe. We are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.
Are you insured?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.
How quickly is the report sent?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email.
Is the repair included in the leak investigation?
This service finds and reports the cause, not to carry out the repair. The report gives any roofer a clear brief.
How much is a survey?
Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. Surveys run seven days a week, which helps when tenants work during the week.
We survey roofs for landlords and letting agents as well as homeowners. A written report with photos gives you a clear record of the leaking roof.
Leaks and storm damage in Stroud
Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.
Take an older house close to Stroud Mission Church: lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. If you own a rental within reach of Petersfield station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. Take a building like Langrish Primary School: a leak through a large roof is frequently found some distance from where the water shows inside.
Stroud is about 2 miles west of Petersfield, in Hampshire. Bookings from Stroud are handled just like any other: a call or an email, a price, then a date. Our Hampshire coverage includes Stroud and the places around it. You can also see our page for Portsmouth.

Can I check my roof myself?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when booking and it will help the survey.
