Chimney survey in Egypt: what you get

A leaning chimney stack is worth having looked at. A stack may lean because the mortar on one side has weakened, which can happen over many years of use. We record the lean and the condition of the brickwork and pointing. If the stack looks like a structural issue, the report recommends a structural engineer. If you are worried about staining on walls around the chimney and a chimney out of line, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Some older homes in villages like Egypt are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.

You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney pots and cowls

On redundant flues, we look at how the pots are capped. Poor capping can lead to damp inside the stack.

Lead flashings

Some older stacks have mortar fillets instead of lead. They tend to crack, so we check them closely.

Tips from our surveys

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:

  • Remove aerials or dishes from the stack if they’re no longer needed
  • Don’t use a ladder to reach the stack yourself
  • Glance at the stacks from the street now and then
  • Ask for ventilated caps on redundant stacks

You can send the report to roofers or builders for quotes. Because everyone is pricing the same findings, the quotes are easier to compare.

Watch for damp or staining on chimney breasts. The sooner damp is spotted, the easier the cause is to find.

Chimney surveys around Egypt

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it’s frequently the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.

If you let a flat or house near Micheldever station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Ebenezer Methodist Chapel, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

Questions from Egypt

Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Micheldever station?

Of course. We just need to know who will give access, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.

Is Egypt within the area you cover?

Yes, Egypt is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Will I get photos?

Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.

What happens next?

You’ll receive the report by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.

How many surveys have you done?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only when it is safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable.

What a chimney survey does not cover

A survey is a close look at the chimney stack, but it cannot do everything. Its limits include:

  • Areas we can’t view from safe positions
  • Gas safety checks, which need a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Hidden damage within the stack

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Chimney pots and cowls
  • Flaunching
  • Brick chimney stacks
  • Shared and party-wall stacks
  • Chimney breasts
  • Lead flashings

What a survey costs

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Roof area
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • Which survey package you book

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

What to tell us when you get in touch

The more you tell us, the easier it is to price the survey. When you get in touch, it is useful to mention:

  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from the ground or a window. To get started, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when booking and it will help the survey.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.

How the survey works

A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It usually takes about one to two hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. For a village or hamlet like Egypt, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. First we talk through the stacks, their history and any problems.
  2. Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
  3. We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
  4. Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there is access.
  5. The report, with photos and recommendations, is emailed to you.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
  • Leave a clear route to the loft
