Chimney surveys in Park Gate: local notes
The coast is about 3 miles or less from Park Gate, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift. If your home is older, it’s worth knowing whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.
If you let a flat or house near Swanwick station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. Anyone responsible for a site like Park Gate Primary School will know that large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.
Park Gate is about 3 miles south-east of Hedge End, in Hampshire. Park Gate is one of many places we visit across Hampshire. Our area takes in places right across Hampshire. There’s also a page for Southampton.

How a chimney survey works in Park Gate
Our survey covers the structure of the stack and its weathering details. It’s not a flue inspection, a chimney sweep or a gas safety inspection. For the flue itself, you will need a sweep or, for gas appliances, a Gas Safe registered engineer. If something we see points to the flue, we will say so. If you are worried about signs that a stack is leaning and lifted or split lead flashings, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Some older homes in villages like Park Gate are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

Can I check my roof myself?
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.

Questions from Park Gate
How do I find out if my home in Park Gate is listed?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Can a landlord with a rental near Swanwick station book a roof survey?
Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. Just phone 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the building.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to.
What does a roof survey cost?
Chimney survey starts from £150, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT.
How many surveys have you done?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Which parts of the chimney do you look at?
The survey covers the pots and cowls, the flaunching, the pointing, the bricks and the flashings. We also check chimney breasts and the stack in the roof space where we can reach. Everything is written up with photographs.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Before and after the survey
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Have brackets on the chimney checked
- File photos of the stacks with your home records
- Leave close inspection to people with safe access
- Ask about consent before removing a chimney on an older property
If the stack is shared, you can pass the report to your neighbour. It shows what we found and where, as far as we could see.
Keep an eye on chimney breasts for new damp patches. Early signs are easier to trace.
How the survey works
The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there’s safe access. In total, it takes about one to two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. Somewhere like Park Gate needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- We start by noting which stacks are in use, shared or causing concern.
- The flashings and the roof around each chimney are inspected.
- We look at the flaunching and pots on every stack.
- Any lean, spalling or worn pointing is recorded.
- The report explains the condition and which work is most urgent.
How to prepare
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
Getting a price
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To get started, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Related advice
Do you need a chimney survey in Park Gate?
Where a chimney meets the roof, lead flashings keep water out. They can lift in wind, crack with age or pull out of the mortar joints. When flashings fail, water often shows up in the loft or on the chimney breast. Lead flashings can also be stolen.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Staining on walls around the chimney
- Lifted or split lead flashings
- Eroded joints in the brickwork
- Frost-damaged brickwork on the stack
For an older house near a landmark such as St Margaret Mary, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
What to check before booking
- How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
What we look for on each type of roof
Chimney breasts and the loft
Stains on timbers or brickwork around the stack can point to a leak. We record what we see with photos.
Lead flashings
Over time, lead can lift or come away from the brickwork. Any loose or split flashings are recorded.
