Chimney survey in Hursley, Hampshire
Chimney surveys around Hursley, with findings in writing and pictures to back them up. Weekday and weekend visits available.
- Eroded joints in the brickwork
- Redundant stacks capped without ventilation
- Damp on a chimney breast inside
Practical tips
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Do not use a ladder to reach the stack yourself
- Have the flue swept and checked if you use the fire
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Check that disused chimneys can still breathe
With a shared stack, the report can help when talking to next door. It shows what we found and where, as far as we could see.
Check your stacks from the street or garden after a storm. Binoculars help you spot loose pots, missing mortar or lifted flashings.
Chimney survey in Hursley: what you get
Chimney stacks take more weather than almost any other part of a house. In time, flaunching cracks, mortar washes out and flashings come loose. That lets water into the brickwork, which can show up as damp on a chimney breast or in the loft space. We record what we find with photographs and recommendations. Common reasons to book are loose, cracked or missing pots and spalled or crumbling bricks, across chimney pots and cowls, shared and party-wall stacks and brick chimney stacks.
Older buildings in small places like Hursley may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.
The report is written in plain words, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

Why act early in Hursley
A damp chimney breast seldom dries out until the cause is found. It can spoil decoration and plaster. Knowing whether it’s the flaunching, flashings, brickwork or ventilation means the right fix can be planned. In a small place like Hursley, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Every price we give includes VAT. Chimney survey starts from £150, including VAT. You’ll know the price for your survey before booking.

Chimney surveys in Hursley: local notes
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of All Saints, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. Anyone responsible for a site like John Keble Church of England Primary School will know that large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. Landlords with a home close to Shawford station may find that the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Hursley

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work.
How it works
After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photographs. As for time on site, most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at most homes; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Somewhere as small as Hursley, access is frequently the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- You let us know how many stacks there are and any damp or problems you’ve noticed.
- Each chimney is viewed from wherever it can safely be seen.
- Every part we can see is checked: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and flashings.
- We check the chimney breasts and the stack in the roof space where we can reach them.
- The findings are written up with photographs and recommendations and emailed to you.
Before the survey
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Jot down any questions you want answered

What this survey can’t tell you
A survey is a careful look at the chimney stack, but it can’t do everything. Its limits include:
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Hidden damage within the stack
- The inside of the flue, which needs a sweep or flue specialist
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll point you to the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.
What we check
- Brick chimney stacks
- Flaunching
- Lead flashings
- Chimney pots and cowls
- Shared and party-wall stacks
- Chimney breasts
How the survey changes by roof type
Chimney pots and cowls
Pots sit in the flaunching on top of the stack, and cowls or caps sit on the pots. We check that they look secure and undamaged.
Brick stacks
Spalled bricks, where the face has flaked off, are a sign of water and frost. We record any we can see.
Hursley questions
Is my home in Hursley listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
I let a flat near Shawford station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and some details.
When does the report arrive?
That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. Reports are sent by email.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
How can you see the top of the stack?
Each stack is viewed from the safest viewpoints: the ground, nearby windows and higher points, and the loft space. A drone inspection is included in our Premium Survey where it applies. We note anything we couldn’t see.
Do you use drones?
Yes, where it’s applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.
Why is my chimney breast damp?
There are a few common causes: cracked flaunching, worn pointing, failed flashings, uncapped pots, or damp trapped in an unventilated stack. Our survey checks each of these and records the likely cause.
