About our chimney survey in Fullerton
Each stack is looked at from the safest viewpoints available: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, and from the loft where there’s access. A drone inspection is part of our Premium Survey where applicable. Where part of a stack can’t be seen, the report says so. Every defect we find is photographed and described in plain words. If you’ve noticed flaunching that has broken away and gaps where the stack meets the roof, we can find out what’s behind it.
In a village or hamlet like Fullerton, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

How the survey changes by roof type
Brick stacks
Most chimney stacks are built of brick, with mortar joints that wear over time. We check the bricks for spalling and the joints for erosion.
Chimney breasts and the loft
Damp patches on chimney breasts often point to a problem above. We check them and at the stack in the loft where there is safe access.
Honest limits
No survey can tell you everything, and it’s better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- Flue inspections or sweeping
- Hidden damage within the stack
- Whether a stack needs rebuilding on structural grounds
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

Fullerton questions
Is my home in Fullerton listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Do you cover smaller places like Fullerton?
Yes, Fullerton is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Do you inspect the flue?
No. It isn’t a flue, sweep or gas safety inspection. We look at the stack, pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, and damp inside, and we’ll say if anything suggests the flue needs checking.
How long is the visit?
It normally takes between one and two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. We’ll confirm the timing when booking.
Why is my chimney breast damp?
Damp on a chimney breast typically means water is getting into the stack, or moisture is trapped inside it. We check the stack, the flashings and how unused flues are capped and records the likely cause.
When does the report arrive?
It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. Reports are sent by email.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.
Why it’s worth a survey now in Fullerton
Damp in a chimney breast normally gets worse while the cause is left. It can spoil decoration and plaster. Finding the cause means the right work can be planned. In a small place like Fullerton, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You’ll know the figure before booking.

Chimney surveys around Fullerton
What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, before anyone quotes for re-roofing. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
If you own a rental within reach of Andover station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints. Homes near green spaces like Longstock Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

When to book a survey in Fullerton
TV aerials, satellite dishes and their brackets are often fixed to chimneys. Their weight and the wind on them can loosen bricks and pointing. We check fixings on the stack as part of the survey.
Things that frequently lead to a survey include:
- A chimney out of line
- Flaunching that has broken away
- Frost-damaged brickwork on the stack
- Gaps where the stack meets the roof
Take an older house close to Church of St Nicholas: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.
Questions to ask before booking

- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one

Checking the roof from the ground
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Share it with us as you book, as it helps us focus the survey.
The survey, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. The whole visit normally takes about one to two hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. Rural addresses near Fullerton can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- First you let us know about the chimneys, any damp on the chimney breasts and any worries.
- The stacks are looked at from ground level, from windows and from other safe vantage points.
- We check and photograph the pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- We check the chimney breasts and the stack in the loft space where we can reach them.
- We send a written report with photos, the defects found and what we recommend.
Getting ready for the survey
- Check pets are kept safely away
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
