Chimney survey in Frithend

A leaning chimney stack is worth having looked at. A stack may lean because the mortar on one side has weakened, which can happen over many years of use. We record the lean and the condition of the brickwork and pointing. If the stack looks like a structural issue, the report recommends a structural engineer. We’re often asked to look into signs that a stack is leaning and staining on walls around the chimney, across chimney breasts, brick chimney stacks and flaunching.

In a small place like Frithend, many roofs stand in the open, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the chimney stack, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Before and after the survey

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:

  • Book a sweep for flues that are in use
  • File photos of the stacks with your home records
  • Ask for ventilated caps on redundant stacks
  • Glance at the stacks from the street now and then

Where another specialist is needed, such as a structural engineer or sweep, we explain why. That helps you brief them.

Check your stacks from the street or garden after a storm. Binoculars help you spot loose pots, missing mortar or lifted flashings.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Why get it checked now?

Loose pots and bricks on a stack are a safety concern. Finding them early means they can be dealt with before they come down by a suitable contractor. Outbuildings and barns around Frithend are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Our price is from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, access and which survey you book.

Frithend homes and their roofs

Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. About 4.8 miles north-east lies Farnham Castle, a reminder of how long the area around Frithend has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

Landlords with a home close to Bentley (Hampshire) station may find that a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. If you live in an older home near The Church Of The Good Shepherd, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

Frithend is about 4 miles south-west of Farnham, in Hampshire. Frithend gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. Across Hampshire, we cover Frithend. Guildford is in our area too.

All of GU35 is within our area for chimney surveys, from the main roads to the quietest streets. Whether your property is on The Kilns and Frith End Road or a nearby road, we can survey it. • Roof area

Helping us price your survey

What helps most when you contact us:

  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • What made you get in touch
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Any deadline, like an exchange date

Most bookings start with a short call: ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will ask a few questions about the roof. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.

When you need someone else

Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • Gas safety checks, which need a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • What’s inside the brickwork or behind render, without opening up
  • Parts of the stack that cannot be seen safely or belong to a neighbour we can’t access

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.

  • Chimney breasts
  • Brick chimney stacks
  • Shared and party-wall stacks

How it works

We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the roof space if there is safe access. In total, it takes an hour or two at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Older roofs in small places like Frithend can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We start by noting which stacks are in use, shared or causing concern.
  2. We check the roof around each stack, including the flashings.
  3. The top of each stack is checked for cracked flaunching and loose pots.
  4. Any lean, spalling or worn pointing is recorded.
  5. You receive a written report setting out what needs attention first.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
