Chimney survey in Farnham, Surrey
A survey of chimney stacks, pots, flashings and flaunching across Farnham, using drones and thermal imaging where applicable. Call or email for a price.

What a chimney survey doesn’t cover
Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Conditions inside walls
- Checks on boilers, fires or their flues
- Structural calculations for a leaning stack
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Chimney survey in Farnham
A chimney survey is about the outside of the stack and the roof around it. It is not a flue inspection, a chimney sweep or a gas safety inspection. If you use a fire or a gas appliance, the flue should be checked by a sweep or a Gas Safe registered engineer as appropriate. If something we see points to the flue, we’ll say so. We are often asked to look into loose, cracked or missing pots and eroded joints in the brickwork, across lead flashings, shared and party-wall stacks and flaunching.
Around Farnham, semis and terraces share chimneys, gutters and roof lines with the house next door. A shared chimney stack or a gutter run across two houses means a defect may sit partly on someone else’s property. Shared parts are looked at as far as they can safely be seen from the property we are surveying. It helps to mention any shared stacks or gutters when you book.
Where we cannot see part of the chimney stack, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Why act early in Farnham
Chimneys are easy to forget because you rarely see the top of them. Defects tend to go unseen until there’s a stain. A survey gives you a clear picture before that happens. In a family home in Farnham, a small roof fault lets water into places you can’t see, like the loft insulation, the top of a wall or the roof timbers. By the time it shows inside, the job has grown.
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £150, including VAT.
Why us?
- Visits on any day of the week
- Independent findings on the roof’s condition
- Covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- Satisfaction rate of 98%

Lead flashings
Some older stacks have mortar fillets instead of lead. They crack with age, and we check them too.
Rendered stacks
Some stacks are rendered, which can hide the condition of the brickwork beneath. We look for cracks, hollow areas and staining.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Farnham
Older houses across Surrey often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. About 0.6 miles north-west lies Farnham Castle, a reminder of how long the area around Farnham has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
Take a building like Farnham College: large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. Take an older house close to St Joan of Arc's Church: the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. Landlords with a home close to Farnham station may find that a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.

Farnham: your questions answered
I let a flat near Farnham station. Can you check the roof?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the details, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Is Farnham in the area you cover?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it helps and it is safe, yes. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
How long does the survey take?
Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take between one and two hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. The report is sent afterwards by email.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Will you check the loft?
If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.
How the survey works
When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we look at everything we can see safely, from the ground, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where applicable. The survey normally takes about one to two hours for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. A survey in Farnham needs access inside and out, including the loft hatch and any rooms with damp. If there’s a side gate or a rear garden, let us know how to reach it. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- We start with the details: how many stacks, whether any are shared and any signs of damp.
- Each chimney is viewed from wherever it can be seen safely.
- The pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, brickwork and flashings are checked and photographed.
- Inside, we look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there is safe access.
- The findings are written up with photographs and recommendations and emailed to you.
Before the survey
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Check pets are kept safely away
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
