Chimney survey in Camberley: what you get
A damp patch on a chimney breast doesn’t always come from the same place. Water may be getting in at the top through cracked flaunching or an uncapped pot, through the brickwork, or at the flashings. Condensation inside an unventilated stack is another common cause. We check each possibility and record what we find. That points the work in the right direction. We’re frequently asked to look into flaunching that has broken away and damaged chimney pots and cowls, on brick chimney stacks, chimney pots and cowls and lead flashings.
Around Camberley, semis and terraces share chimneys, gutters and roof lines with the house next door. When a stack or gutter is shared, the problem may not be on your side alone. We can only inspect what we have access to, so shared parts are reported as far as they can safely be seen. Let us know as you book if you know of anything shared with next door.
You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

What a chimney survey looks like in Camberley
Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls are typical of Surrey’s older houses. Some old buildings in Surrey and Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.
If you live near a park such as Tekels Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys. If you let a flat or house near Camberley station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. If you live in an older home near Church of St Paul, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

When you need someone else
A survey is a close look at the chimney stack, but it cannot do everything. The main limits are:
- Areas we can’t view from safe positions
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Gas safety checks, which need a Gas Safe registered engineer
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

FAQs for Camberley
I let a flat near Camberley station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. Just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and tell us about the building, including who will give access on the day.
How do I find out if my home in Camberley is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is Camberley in your area?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, Camberley included.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.
Will you check the chimney is safe to use with a fire?
No. Our survey covers the outside of the stack and the roof around it. The flue should be checked by a sweep, or by a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas appliances.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.
What should I do with a chimney I do not use?
A redundant chimney needs looking after like any other. Capping without airflow can lead to damp. We check how it is capped and its condition, so you can decide with a builder what to do.
Tips that help
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Check with the council before altering a stack in a conservation area or on a listed building
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Make sure fixings on the stack are secure
- Check that disused chimneys can still breathe
Once we’ve been, the findings are written up with photos. It explains the condition of each part of the stack and any damp inside. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.
Unused stacks should be capped in a way that still lets air through. Ventilation helps keep the stack dry.
What we look for on each type of roof
Brick stacks
Brick stacks rely on sound pointing to keep water out. We check the bricks for spalling and the joints for erosion.
Lead flashings
Where the chimney meets the roof slopes, lead flashings keep water out. The survey looks at whether the lead is tight, sound and well fixed.
How the survey works
On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where it applies. Most surveys take an hour or two for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. For a home in Camberley, the main things we need are a way into the loft, a route to the back garden and somewhere to park. Someone needs to let us in, so let us know who that will be.
- First we talk through the stacks, their history and any problems.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- We look for damp on chimney breasts and in the roof space.
- The report, with photos and recommendations, is emailed to you.
Preparing for the visit
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Jot down any questions you want answered

Advice
Checking the roof from ground level
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.
