- Damp on a chimney breast inside
Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Temple Valley
If you’re buying a home with chimneys, it’s worth knowing their condition before you exchange. On older stacks, we often find cracked flaunching, loose flashings and worn pointing. You get photographs and findings you can take back to the seller or agent. It complements a RICS home survey rather than replacing it. We survey lead flashings, chimney pots and cowls and flaunching, and common reasons people get in touch are mortar washing out of the joints and a stack that appears to lean.
Some older homes in villages like Temple Valley are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Temple Valley
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Historic houses such as Hinton Ampner House, about 4.2 miles east, show how far back building in the area around Temple Valley goes. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

What we are asked to look at in Temple Valley
Chimney stacks stand above the roof, exposed to wind, rain and frost on every side. Frost works into cracks in the flaunching and pointing, and rain soaks into worn brickwork. People typically call us when they notice damp or a problem with the stack, or before a purchase.
It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Gaps where the stack meets the roof
- Gaps in the mortar around the pots
- Damp patches on chimney breasts
- Spalled or crumbling bricks
If you own a rental within reach of Winchester station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.
Questions to ask before you book
- What exactly goes into their report
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
The survey, step by step
The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect about one to two hours for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. In a hamlet or village like Temple Valley, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- You tell us whether any stacks are shared, unused or leaning.
- We check the roof around each stack, including the flashings.
- We look at the flaunching and pots on every stack.
- We note the brickwork, pointing and any sign of leaning.
- You receive a written report setting out what needs attention first.
Preparing for the visit
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Let us know about parking before the day
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

What you can safely check yourself
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
How we price chimney surveys
To price your survey, we look at:
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- The shape of the roof and its details
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- The roof’s overall size
Our price is from £150, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, inc. VAT.
Booking your survey
Getting the details right at the start saves time. It’s useful to include:
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
- Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To find a date that works for you, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and the days you’d prefer.
Questions from Temple Valley
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Winchester station?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and what you need.
How do I find out if my home in Temple Valley is listed?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you work in Temple Valley?
Yes. We survey roofs in Temple Valley and the rest of Hampshire, as part of our work across London and South East England. For a price, call 07833 053749 or email us.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only when it’s safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
How do I book a survey in Temple Valley?
To book, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and agree a day with you.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys run seven days a week. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or email us.
For landlords and managing agents
With a portfolio of properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the addresses.
Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
What we look for on each type of roof
Chimney pots and cowls
For unused flues, we check whether caps or cowls allow ventilation. Capping without ventilation can trap moisture.
Brick stacks
Frost can damage bricks that have soaked up water, making the faces flake away. Any spalling is noted with photos.
