Chimney survey in Thruxton, Hampshire
A survey of chimney stacks, pots, flashings and flaunching in Thruxton, with drones and thermal imaging where they help. Call or email for a price.
- Staining on walls around the chimney
- Loose, cracked or missing pots
- Frost-damaged brickwork on the stack
Signs you need a chimney survey in Thruxton
Flashings seal the gap where a stack passes through the roof. They can lift in wind, crack with age or pull out of the mortar joints. When flashings fail, water often shows up in the loft or on the chimney breast. Lead flashings can also be stolen.
Problems we come across frequently include:
- Gaps where the stack meets the roof
- Worn or missing pointing
- Unused flues sealed without airflow
- Damp on a chimney breast inside
If you look after a building such as Amport Church of England Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Thruxton
On terraced and semi-detached houses, a chimney stack is often shared with next door. We look at what can safely be seen and what the owner gives us access to. Where a problem seems to involve a neighbour’s side, the report records it and you can then discuss it with them. Everything is written up with photos and our recommendations. We survey flaunching, brick chimney stacks and chimney breasts, and people most often book us about mortar washing out of the joints and pots or cowls that look unsafe.
Somewhere as small as Thruxton, homes are frequently older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it’s normally the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What we do, step by step
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a report with photographs, emailed to you. On timing, most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. Around Thruxton, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- First we talk through the stacks, their history and any problems.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- We look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft space.
- The report, with photos and recommendations, is emailed to you.
Getting ready for the survey
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

What a chimney survey does not cover
A survey is a proper look at the chimney stack, but it can’t do everything. Its limits include:
- Hidden sides of a shared stack
- Whether a gas appliance or its flue is safe
- Hidden damage within the stack
If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Chimney surveys around Thruxton
England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Peter and St Paul, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. If you own a rental within reach of Grateley station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.
Thruxton is about 4 miles west of Andover, in Hampshire. If you are in Thruxton, booking works exactly as it does anywhere else: get in touch, agree the price and pick a day. We cover towns and villages across Hampshire. We also survey roofs in Southampton.

What you can safely check yourself
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
Tips that help
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:
- Make sure unused flues are capped with ventilation
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Glance at the stacks from the street now and then
- Have brackets on the chimney checked
Questions about the findings are always welcome. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.
Unused stacks should be capped in a way that still lets air through. Ventilation helps keep the stack dry.
Your questions about chimney surveys in Thruxton
Is my home in Thruxton listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Grateley station?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address and what you need, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
Do you need to go on the roof to check the chimney?
We inspect from wherever is safe: from the ground, windows and vantage points, and from the loft where there’s access. Our Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where applicable. We note anything we couldn’t see.
What happens after the survey?
We email you the written report with photographs and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.
What will the report tell me?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, finishing with recommendations. Points are put by urgency where it matters.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it’s applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not unless it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone.
What a survey costs
When we price a survey, we consider:
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- House, block, shop or office
- Which survey package you book
- Building height and the viewpoints available
One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
What we need to know
The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, let us know:
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- Anything about access we should know
- Dates you’re working to, like exchange
Our price is from £150, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, and you can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email to find out.
