How a thermal roof survey works in Thruxton

Thermal imaging works best in the right conditions. It’s useful to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, a strong wind or heavy cloud can make the images less clear. We talk through the forecast as you book, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. If you’ve noticed water that travels before it shows and damp around chimneys and parapets, we can find out what’s behind it, on insulated roof spaces, ceilings below the roof and flat roofs alike.

Villages like Thruxton often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible.

Airspace, weather and Thruxton roofs

A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter and St Paul, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Thruxton is about 4 miles west of Andover, in Hampshire. Thruxton gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. Thruxton is one of the towns and villages in Hampshire we cover for thermal roof surveys. Our Southampton page covers surveys nearby.

Here we cover the SP11 postcode area for thermal roof surveys. We cover properties on Lambourne Way, Lambourne Close and Stanbury Close and the roads around them. We also cover the places around Thruxton: Mullenspond (1 mile east), East Cholderton (1 mile south-east), Fyfield (1 mile north), Weyhill (1 mile north-east) and Appleshaw (2 miles north-east). We also work in nearby towns such as Andover (4 miles east), Hyde (15 miles south-east), Tidworth (4 miles north-west), Weeke (14 miles south-east), Stanmore (15 miles south-east) and Ludgershall (3 miles north-west).

What we’re asked to look at in Thruxton

Cold rooms under a roof, or high heating bills, lead some people to ask about heat loss. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated roof areas can show up on the camera, particularly when there’s a clear difference between inside and outside.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Leaks far from where the stain appears
  • Damp patches with no obvious cause
  • Damp around roof outlets and upstands
  • Missing or slipped insulation

If you look after a building like Amport Church of England Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What happens after the report arrives
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • When you’ll get the report

What a good roof survey covers

Why get it checked now?

For buyers, a thermal survey adds detail that a visual inspection cannot give. Finding hidden moisture before exchange gives you facts to raise with the seller. In a place like Thruxton, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can safely be seen and which survey you book.

What we do, step by step

It’s useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit typically takes between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Older rural homes like those around Thruxton can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Advice

What we look for on each type of roof

Single-ply and EPDM roofs

On larger commercial single-ply roofs, thermal imaging can help target moisture readings. It focuses the survey on the areas that matter.

Loft insulation

Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. The camera can show where it no longer covers the ceiling.

Honest limits

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations
  • Proving moisture from the images alone
  • Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Commercial roofs
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Flat roofs
  • Loft conversions

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Thruxton

Do you cover Thruxton?

Yes, Thruxton is within the area we cover. We work right across London and the South East. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the property.

Is Thruxton within the area you cover?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with the freeholder or managing agent. Let us know about it when you book and we will plan the survey around it.

What’s in the report?

Written findings with photographs, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations, by urgency where it matters. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

Will thermal imaging find my leak?

It often helps show where to look. Patterns can suggest where trapped water has spread. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings because the camera can’t confirm water on its own.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.

Before and after the survey

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. A few suggestions:

  • Check from ground level or a window, never by climbing
  • Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
  • Don’t switch the heating off before the visit
  • Use the report as a baseline for later checks

Where a pattern can’t be confirmed, the report says what could help, for example electronic leak detection or a roofer opening up a small section.

Consider a repeat survey after major work on the roof in suitable weather.
